Snow and ammo a day late.
« on: December 01, 2009, 12:31:33 PM »
Some of the .445 ammo arrived today along with the snow.  Rifle deer season ended yesterday.  The fresh snow would have made still hunting a heck of a lot easier.  It's a good thing I didn't get a shot with the .445 loaded with 44 LEs.  It shot 12 clicks off to the left at 50 yards.  Don't know how it happened, but I put two through it before I tried the .445s.  It was in the woods for 2 weeks, so really about anything could have happened.  Thanks Tim, I really like the .445.  It seems to have just the right punch.

Glad ya like it, but how are the 445s shootin for accuracy, or did the snow kinda interfere with that?

I can't really tell ya yet.  All I did was corrrect whatever was wrong to begin with by shooting LEs, and shot only 3 rounds of .445 to make sure they'd be on paper.  Blowing snow cut it short.  I didn't see a lot of difference in POI on the LEs and the .445s, but it was only 50 yards, and I wasn't set up for bench rest shooting because of the weather.  The .445s are 240 gr. LRNFPs.  I think they'd do a number on a deer.......next season, perhaps.

Pete,
Where did you end up getting the ammo from?

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny, I got it from Custom Cartridge, Goleta CA, customcartridge.com.  It aint cheap :-\  I've got some more backordered from Reeds Ammunition.  I bought it because I wanted to shoot it before I'm able to reload for it this winter, plus, it'll give some brass to start with.

Now you've got me curious...do the .445's fit w/o reaming?  BTW, I checked Starline's site and they make 445 brass, but it is backordered with no ETA.

The 44mag will require reaming for the 445Supermag, it can be done by hand with a rented reamer.

I'm glad to hear that worked-out for you. What's next?  A range report?? ::)

;D ;D ;D ;DThe range report is gonna wait a bit.  The weather is crappy and Friday starts ML season til the 14th and then Bow til 1 January.  There's only a little venison from last year in the freezer, so the old man has work to do.  Years ago, by 9:30 opening morning we were having tenderloin and eggs for breakfast.......those days are gone....I hope not forever.  Too many doe tags, wolves, coyotes, now cougar, finally admitted by DNR, and deer car collisions have done it.  The insurance companies are :D ;D ;) :D ;D :D ;)

A really funny thing is I've had .38+Ps on order from Sportsmans Guide since late August; a good price, plus coupons.  The current expected shipping date is Dec 26th. ::)  I bought a bunch at a gun show and figured they'd last til the first of the year, so I told them to keep the order in.
