460 S&W snub nose ?
« on: December 04, 2009, 02:20:18 PM »
Does anyone own a snubnose 460?  One of my local dealers has one in the case that he will let go for "a good price".   I am wondering about practicality, accuracy and recoil with the short barrel.  Also, what is "a good price"?  He said it came with some sort of survival kit and a waterproof case.

Thanks,
Kevin

I believe the gun you are referring to is a Bear Attack Survival gun. It is not a range gun, or a cwc gun, nor is it intended for hunting as other .460s. It main purpose is to have a last ditch effort once a bear is upon you @ arms length. This gun will not be pleasant to practice with or to shoot targets with regularly. If this is what you are after, then by all means get it, but if not, there are many other .460 models that are better suited for the majority of folks. My PC .460 is pleasant to shoot and as accurate as many rifles I own out to 150 yards. It is my primary firearm I use for deer, and I enjoy it immensely............but I have never felt the need to have a snub nose model, nor would I ever recommend one to anyone unless for the criteria previously mentioned.

That all sounds about right.  I kind of expected it would be harsh on recoil.  I have never seen a bear here in Florida.  They say there are some, but the have so many laws protecting them that shooting one would not be good.

Thanks,
Kevin

Got to be the silliest gun in existence. The whole reason for the .460 is to push light weight bullets at high speed. If ya want a short barrel just get a .454 Casull and use heavy for caliber bullets.

Well I am good for just about 3 shots with my .460 Smith & Wesson using Max loads! It is not fun regardless of what anybody else might tell you. It has a much longer barrel too! I don't know how anybody could practice very long with a snub nose .460 S&W. It would be as useless as tits on a bore hog in my opinion. ::)

Yep I kinda thought it was silly.  That is probably why the guy will sell it at a good price.  It does shoot casull and 45LC too though.

I can't beleive a dealer was stupid enough to order one of these for stock.

I think he got it when the gun buying frenzy was in full swing.  Probably was one of the few things available at that time.

If these sell, maybe we can get some custom 6 inch Encore barrels in 460 Weatherby made.

I'll be the devils advocate here: Personally, I think one of these would be great for salmon fishing in Alaska or timber tramping up there. Not a gun anyone would like to put a couple hundred rounds through in a day but, very powerful and accurate. Might even work in Montana hiking in the Bob Marshall wilderness area? Everybody told me getting a S&W 500 with 5" barrel and without a compesator was foolish but, now that I own one, wouldn't have it any other way! I think recoil growns on the internet?

I can imagine the muzzle flash/blast would be extreme, since most of the powder would burn just outside the barrel.
