Littlest Handi does its job!!
« on: November 29, 2009, 04:02:37 PM »
It snowed here in AZ yesterday and I thought it would make for the perfect Sunday afternoon to take my 17 HMR Sportster out to see if we could call up a yote.  The ground was quiet and my buddy and I (along with his 6 year old son) got set up in some juniper scrub.  Less than 5 minutes into my calling we had one running right at us.  It turned broadside at 30 yards and the little handi went pop and the dog went flop!    Half hour later we called another in and my buddy dropped this one with his "non-handi" 17 HMR at 160 measured yards.  Two shots, two dead coyotes.   Best part was seeing the face of his little boy!!!  ;D   He can't wait to do it again...  to tell the truth - I can't either!!

160 yds on a coyote with a 17hmr seems like a pretty long shot for that caliber.  Where did he hit the coyote?

He was directly facing us.   Put the bullet in the chest... just off center from the sternum - perfect shot.  I was surprised to see him go down so quick myself...   Agreed that the 17 is light for this distance, but with a good rest and shot placement can do the job very well.

I guess that goes to show the importance of shot placement.  Nice shooting to you and your friend.

Calling and shooting a yote is always enough to keep the boy in any of us. Congrats to both of you!
