What's typically the most accurate caliber???????
« on: November 29, 2009, 08:37:39 AM »
For you multiple Handi Rifle owners:

What is typically the most accurate caliber(s)/barrels at 100 yards?

I know you find good/bad ones in all things man made, but I'm looking to add a deer hunting barrel to my SB2 and I'd like to narrow the odds.

Haven't shot the 30-30, but if Tim says it is accurate, you can believe it.  I have found both the 45-70 and .357 to both be very accurate.  Both of our 45-70's were accurate out of the box, and not really picky about ammo.  My .357 was OK out of the box, but after a few shooting trips, it magically came together with 1 inch groups at 80 yards (thats the distance I sight mine in at) and because I was using a cheesy rest, I'm sure it is more accurate than that.

After all the talk I've read here about 30-30's, guess I'll be getting one in the future. Geez, this site is expensive!

I've had 3 .357s, extractors, and an ejector and an extractor each in .47-70.  All five were/are superb shooters.  Everything I hear about the .30-30, I know I'm going to have to break down and get one.  The trouble is, my Marlin .30-30 levergun is looking for work now. :P

Have a few 30-06s. All shoot well. I tend to overscope them though.

I have had really good luck with all the calibers mentioned as well as the 223 Rem.

But you asked for ONE.. I vote the 30-30 Winchester!!

I don't have one in a Handi, and I just can't part with my Winny 94, but from all I've read the 30-30 out of the box is the most accurate.

My experience has been only with the 45-70 and the .357 Magnum, and a lot of folks agree, they are not all that finicky about what ammo you run thru them.

The 30-30 isn't the most glamorous cartridge out there, but I like to compare it to a carpenters hammer.   There is a lot of fancier nail guns out there, but that old hammer just continues to do the job.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Careful with that bet, because he didn't specify how big the hole was he can put them in!

.30-30 would be hard to beat for most accurate, out-of-the-box chambering.

.30-30 but the .45-70 is the easiest to find an accurate load for.  In fact it isn't easy to find a bad load for the .45-70.

Don't have one in 30-30, but out of the ones I have(270,243,223) the 223 is the best grouper.

Dang, I wasnt gonna get another handi for a while!  ::)

I had a 308, 30-06, and 30-30 along with a .223. Still have three 30-30's and the .223. 30-30 gets my vote.

I will have to say my .204 Ruger is the most accurate Handi Rifle barrel to date with factory the Hornady 32-gr V Max @ 100 yards.... see range report thread.

Never had experience with the 30-30, but the 45-70 and 30-06 are very accurate.  I own eight 30-06s.  Remingtons, Savage, T/Cs, and two Handis.  The Handis are just as accurate as the T/Cs, Savage, or the Remingtons.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
