Blackhorn 209 Skeptic
« on: November 17, 2009, 04:53:21 AM »
I have finally been able to do a little testing on my own. I had been following the posts of this powder and plugs and primers and I have to say I was a skeptic . I have seen the latest and greatest come and go before so even though others here that I trust thier opinion have been doing much work with this stuff and posting about it(thanks) I was not sure. It really is that much better than what I originally thought. I did not test a bunch of loads or a bunch of bullets I just stayed with the No Excuses full bore bullets that I have that shoot well out of all three .45 .50 and I do not have the proper plug for the .58 so I have stayed with the Shockeys gold .But every thing that has been said... instant ignition, high veloscity and next to 0 fouling is entirley true I have more than 30rounds out of each the .45 and 50 and still not had to sawb! After the season I am going to work on acctually backing off on the powder some or put recoil pads on the guns as this stuff packs a wallop over the subs I was using. I didn't try that yet because the 80gr loads I started with are very good accurate and since I got a late start as I have been very busy this yr I stayed with the starting loads. I am no longer a skeptic and have been very happy with this stuff so far. Kurt

I too was skeptical but from reading the reports that Busta and others posted got on the bandwagon. Now in the inline muzzy forum there is a thread about some bad canisters of Blackhorn surfacing. I don't know what to make of it. Being that all I have is 200 grain bullets from Dead Center, I might develop the same problem. Nothing bad yet, but you never know.

I have read only good reports on it until now. Using 80 grains of Blackhorn 209 as well

***Edited to add the only problem so far is removing the spent primer. What is the best "tool" out there for that task?***

Ordered this today. It is made by CVA
#209 Capper/Extractor Tool
AC1677 $4.95
Allows for easy capping and removal of
#209 shot shells primers. Works on any
brand of in-line muzzleloader.

Not sure what forum you are talking about, but I was on one of them with a complaint.  I had a problem with no ignition and itreally frustrated me while out in the woods.  I  ended up getting in touch with the company and got a quick response from a rep.  He told  me to change primers from a Winchester to either the CCI 209M or the Federal 209A.  He said that the Win primer was too weak to ignite the BH209 powder.  Since our talk I have tried the CCI 209M primers and am getting an ignition every time.  I will be shooting my gun and this load to build up my confidence again.  I am using 100 grs. of BH209 and the Hornaday FPB bullet.  At the range I am getting fantastic results and would love to use it in the woods next season.  Good luck in your shooting time.

Larry were you the poster that had the alleged three or four bad cansiters of BH 209? I would take it that you didn't end up throwing it out? If so, that is good to hear.

I probably was relaying that message here when phatinjun posted he was a skeptic.

I only have used Federal 209A primers, and have not had any problems. Good to hear that your problem is working it's way out.

Yes I had two cannisters, but if I was using the wrong primer tht would account for the same results.  The powder is very accurate and easy to use.  I am also glad tha it turned out the way it did.  I may take the gun and powder to the range today and shoot some more.
