7x57 scores again!
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:56:53 PM »
Looks like the old war horse cartridge can still get it done.
As some of you know from last year my youngest son Lee fell in love with my 7x57 Handi and took 3 deer with it, all one shot bang flops.
This morning he scored deer #4, again with one shot.
No bang flop but a very well placed shot behind the shoulder as it was quartering away from him about 70 yds away.
It only ran a little over 20 yds.
Turned out to be a little button buck.
He was going for the larger doe but just as he was ready she started to run so he moved over to the smaller one and made the classic shot complete with the deer doing the hump up we all know as the sign of a good hit.
Fours shots and four deer.
I will say one thing for him, he doesn't waste any ammo!   ;)

Man, being a parent is great and sharing quality time with ones child has got to be the best thing in life!!!

Agreed.

I also agree that the 7x57 is a great old cartridge. ;)

I killed two does this season with my 7x57 Ruger...in about 8 seconds.  The first was about 150 yards up a wooded hill, the second was maybe 40 yards away across a pasture.  The closer one did not run at the first shot, it just stood there amazed at the noise.  Bad move.

Good going, my son also scored with my 45/70 handi this year on a similar size deer.  For some reason he decided to shoot it 2x, not sure why....

LONGTOM, Congratulations to to both you and your young son Lee. It soulds like he is a classic and a keeper, just like the 7x57. I am sure you are proud of him, you have every right to be. Your story brings back great memories of when my son was younger and we would hunt together in Maine, and of  the great shots he would make with his 30-30. Thanks to you and your son for bringing back great memories from 20 years ago. Spend as much time with your children as you can, for all to soon you will turn around and he will have children of his own....<><....:)

Thanks for sharing this great hunting experience. I can't wait to take my son out. He needs to get a few years older to shoot but should be able to start sitting with me in a year or two.

Darn, and I thought I might have a chance of talkin' ya out of the 7X57 :'(.  That's great that your son has a passion for the great 7mm.  That and it's twin, 7mm-08, are about as perfect a deer cartridge as there is.  Best part of it is with the right bullet, they will handle Moose or elk as well.  Congrats to your son.  DP
