HELP!! With Scope Ring Mounts!!!!
« on: November 23, 2009, 09:45:28 AM »
Hello everyone.  I am TRYING to mount a scope on my Handi.  Incase it matters its a .500.  Went down to my local gun shop and they had the H&R mount.  I then went down to Wally World and bought a pack of the Solid Steel Weaver mounts.  Med. Rise as I have read that's what most people use.  Not even close to being tall enough!!

I then took them back and exchanged them for "High" Mounts.  STILL not even close to being high enough.

Am I missing something here?  What do I need??

Thanks

Brandon

Depends on the scope, as stated in the FAQs, a large power ring of ocular bell may require extra high rings. Best advice is modify the hammer for clearance as shown in the FAQs.

You don't say how big the scope bell is???40mm,42mm,50mm.That'll make the difference. Also that's a thick barrel.I've always been able to use the tall Weaver rings on mine, but the biggest scope has a 44mm bell.Slow

If you're talking about hammer interference, use a file to grind away the area where the hammer extension sits. Then cut the top of the hammer off. I was able to use Leupold Rifleman size medium mounts after I lowered the hammer. I also had to grind the release button just a little on top, the hammer extension was rubbing on that as it went forward. I then touched it up with blue dye, it looks and works perfect.

Look at the FAQs for hammer mods for other suggestions.

You can

1) buy see through rings (ultra high)
2) slide the scope back and forth til it clears stuff, hoping that the eye relief and cheek weld work out.
3) buy a shotgun scope and mount it in front of the hammer.

2x7x32 what? Large adj rings and bulbous ocular lenses cause the need for higher rings. MOST any high or extra high will work... but WHY??? Mounting a scope so high over the bore ruins good shooting posture. Mount it as lo as you can!

Here are a couple pics of Leupold LO RINGS PRW with 3x, 1x4x20 & 2x7x32 Leupold scopes. None of these have any alterations to the hammer.

PRW rings and Weaver 82 base:
Here is a NIKON 2x7x32

Here is a Leupold 3x9x40 in Weaver med 4x4 rings:

Here is a Pentax fixed 4X scope in LO Leupold PRW rings:

Here is a Burris 1x5x20 with the same LO Leupold PRW rings Weaver 82 base:

Before you think the PRW rings are your only option. Here is a pic of WARN LO rings with a Leupold 2x7 scope!!

Don't know.  All I know is I had to use Weaver Extra High Mounting Rings.  It works though.

ALL of the info discussed so far including all of CW's pics and many more are covered in the FAQs topic Rings!!  ::)

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,107215.msg1098310190.html#msg1098310190

Did they use an H&R base, or a Weaver #82 base? The #82 forces the rear ring to be mounted too far forward due to the flat spot at the rear of the base which limits the positioning of the scope too far forward which puts the hammer right under the ocular bell or power ring. I have about 40 H&Rs mounted with scopes, none are mounted in rings higher than medium, some are mounted in extra low rings, so low that the turret saddle barely clears the base.  :) It doesn't take much work to remove the tip of the hammer spur to make room for your scope. ;)

Just to be clear I am not saying that you all are wrong in any way....

BUT.....

Why couldn't I use Medium or High Rings to work?  I mounted a Center Point 2-7x32mm Shotgun Scope.( I know it's not the greatest thing in the world)  I used an H&R Scope Mount.  I had the rearward scope ring in the most rearward position on the scope rail and had the scope shoved back towards the buttstock end of the gun as far as I could get it.  And even then the High Rings would not work.

And I completely and unequivocally understand that this subject was covered in the FAQ's.  If this thread is such a problem, then remove it.

Thanks for all the support and help.

I don't think it is a problem, I would like a picture of your mounting setup.  Larry

It's not a problem, but armed with the info in the FAQs before hand, the Center Point scope was a poor choice for a Handi due to the huge power ring and ocular bell in combination with having a short mounting area, a very unfriendly Handi scope. Having read the info first, it would have put up red flags I would think. I'd opt for a different scope or work on the hammer if you don't want to use the extra high rings.

Yes, not only does it put the line of sight well above the bore which can cause sighting and POI discrepancies if the rifle is canted a little, but an even bigger problem is the height causes you to lift your head and face above the stock so much that it affects cheek weld which is very important for accurate shooting as CW mentioned about shooting posture.

The nikon prostaff 2X7X32 shotgun scope is what i have on my 44 mag and it fits great with the weaver medium rings you tried. the body is a little longer and gives more room for back and foward adjustmnts. they are about $139 at dick's sporting goods.

I'm just gonna give this setup a try.  Thanks for all the advice.  I am not overly cool with using the rings that I have to use.  But I know of more than one person that have optics mounted on top of their carry handle of their AR's, and they have no trouble hitting targets well past 150 yards. Consistently.  And optics on top of an AR carry handle are way higher than what my scope is mounted.

Thanks again.

Sure, I mean why not its on there right?  BTW, no one said it wouldn't work, its just not ideal. Heck, your buddies AR and MILLIONS of 30-30's with iron site shoot thru mounts are out there too. Numbers don't make it rite, but it works. Good luck with your setup!!

You can always buy a pre made pad or duct tape a hacked up foam pad to the top of the stock to raise the cheek weld.

Thanks.
