BC rifling
« on: November 19, 2009, 06:00:37 PM »

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum.  I'm getting a Buffalo Classic .45/70 in a couple weeks and I wanted to load blackpowder cartridges for it.  But now I've heard that the H & R barrels have micro-groove type rifling, if I understand correctly.  So does this mean the Buffalo Classics are not well suited for blackpowder cartridges?  Are there any special tips for shooting blackpowder in these rifles?  I handload blackpowder cartridges for my .45 Colt New Vaquero, so I'm not totally new to this.

I have a 38-55 target rifle that has similar rifling (same maker) and it works fine with Black powder.  I also have a 22 inch handy and it shoots bp just fine.  Slug your bore to make sure your bullet is fat enough.  I size mine to .459" and lube with BP lube and you should do fine.

All my BC's, and all I've ever seen, have Ballard type rifling.    ...probably because H&R knew that many folks would use blackpowder loads with lead slugs.

Well that's good news.  I'll use it mainly for blackpowder, and it's good to know that'll work well.  Thanks for the replies everyone!

To my knowledge  they do not have micro groove rifling   MY  38/55 does not and it is the same type  IF it were to have micro groove rifling  then check wiht Ranch Dog Molds who makes bullet molds for  micro goove barrels   I have two and they work fine

The only H&R barrel that I know of for sure that has MG rifling is the Versa Pack 22Lr, I have 42 H&R rifles, none have MG rifling.

I've learned a lot here already, and I appreciate everyone's help.  I checked out this forum a few years ago, but this website was so slow then that I lost interest and went to other forums.  But now the GBO forum works great!  It'll be one of my favorite places now.   :)
