357 Handi now a MAX
« on: November 17, 2009, 04:07:33 PM »
Well I finally did it.  I got Tim's reamer and now my 357 mag Handi is a Max.  Got the barrel from a member here quite a while ago and shot it a little.  Was accurate as a magnum and although I only had enough time to load up a couple of different rounds with some 180gr. Speer FMJ bullets.  Got it on paper then ran back to 100 yards and shot a coupl e of groups.  Not too bad for the short time and few rounds I had loaded up.  Barrel is mounted up on my Ultra frame and it's wearing a Mueller 3x9 with the German post reticle.  Anyone got any pet loads using H110,H4227, LilGun?  It seemed to like the H110 loads I made up the best so far.  I have other powders but those seem most suitable.  Thanks again Tim.  What a cartridge!

LM,

It went back to Tim yesterday via Priority Mail.  What an easy job to do.  I took my time and used lots of cutting oil and stopped every few times and brushed the shavings off and still it only took about a half hour.  The only problem that I ran into was not having a square socket for my nut driver to fit the reamer.  Solved that by upending a 3/8" drive 7/16" short socket then double nutting a short 1/4x20 bolt and setting that inside the upended 7/16" socket and using another 7/16" socket on that to turn the reamer.  ::)  As they say, necessity is the mother of invention!  ;D

How many times can reamer be used before it becomes dull? Sorry for the dumb question, but I can't help but think it would wear out at some point.

I dunno, the last reamer did 12-15 barrels before the reamer turned up missing as I recollect, no one complained about it not working, I suppose it depends on how well the reamer is treated, use lots of cutting oil, clean it often and never turn it backwards, and we should get lots of use out of it.  ;)

Does anyone have a clue if Remington, considering the rapidly expanding popularity of the max, will put the cartridge back into production?  It would be very nice.  They now have more than one line of single shots that could be chambered for them and with just a little engineering, the Marlin leverguns could handle them.

That would make sense, seeing how Remington has the market cornered on the brass already.  The fact that it makes sense could be the problem.

I'm still debating reaming mine, it is just so accurate now, I hate to mess with.  I'm getting a second barrel, so I'll probably ream it to Max.  Already have bullets, brass, primers and dies.

BrianB, I went through the same dilema.  "It's accurate now, do I want to mess with it."  I got the second one, it was accurate; reamed the first one, and it  still shoots .38s and Mags right on the money.  From my experience, it's a no sweat issue.

.45-70, loosen up that wallet and do the Max.  You'll wonder why you haven't done it sooner.  It costs a lot less than a new rifle, and that's what you get.....a new rifle.

I sent off an email to Remington this morning asking if they would reconsider .357 Max ammo production as well as offering it in their single shots and the Marlin .357 leverguns.  I'll post what I hear.

I haven't tryed them yet, but as to loads the OP requested, I e-mailed Johan Loubser, (johan@ramshot.com) for loads using Accurate 1680.  He was kind enough to respond with start and max loads for 158 gr and 180 gr.  Not sure if Bill wants loads posted here, but if you PM me I will forward the loads.  DP

Accurate has 357Max data for 180gr bullets including AA1680 on their website.

This powder has given me hands down the best accuracy in my handi 357 maxi!!! Mine is a max load with a 180 SSP or 180Speer FP bullet.

I haven't gotten a reply from Remingdingdong about the .357 Max.  Could it be they might consider the idea?  Night all.
