Anyone ever used "DampOut" dehumidifier in a jar????
« on: November 17, 2009, 01:15:53 PM »
So I tried this product, and it seems to work.  Today I was going through the safe and there was water standing on the top shelf.  Upon further examination, the plastic container had cracked and the trapped water leaked out and all over the shelf  :o.  Upon further and closer reading of the instructions it says "The manufacturer is not responsible for damage due to spills or leaks"...  Hmmm...how about using a good container to start..  Oh well, my mistake for not reading into that although who would have thought that would have happened?  Maybe if it were damaged, but it appears that in the chemical absorbing water, it swelled and cracked the container thus causing the leak.  I have now placed the chemical in "redundant containment" and put it back in the safe.  Just a heads up if anyone is using this stuff, I believe that it works, but check your containers...

Here is an image of the product:

I haven't tried it. I have a GoldenRod dehumidifier in my safe and I like it a lot.

I hope you went to a lot of effort to get the contaminant cleaned up. It might just be very hard on metal. My dad claimed all those type products were just calcium chloride in a fancy package. Myself I use silica gel, used to be a cat litter that was silica gel. When its wet you can dry it in the oven at 300 for an hour or so and reuse. That's before the cat gets to it of course.

That's what it is...calcium chloride.  The water didn't get on anything.

I will probably go to a goldenrod sooner or later...

It will draw more moisture than the tub will hold too. Dad used to go with a five gallon bucket with cacl in it at a winter home in Fl . Started leaving them in the sinks and tub cause one year he had one over flow onto floor.
