.30-30 Makes Another One Shot Kill
« on: November 18, 2009, 12:00:04 PM »
Opening weekend and last Friday evening and Saturday morning hunts I hunted with my .25-06 Handi, nothing to shoot at.  Before going out on Saturday evening I changed rifles, pulled out the back up, a
.30-30 Handi to see if it changed my luck.  It did, with 10 minutes of shooting light left the doe came to the feeder.  When she walked off and had gone about 25 yards from the feeder I put a Hornady LE round through her ribs.  She went about 25 yards and went down for good.  Glad that is all the further she went as there was no blood trail.  Shot hit in the ribs about 6 inches behind the right front leg about half way up the body and exited about 2 inches behind the off side front leg.  Found all the blood in the chest cavity when field dressing, everything in front of the diaghram was puree.  This is the third kill for this rifle.
This is the second season hunting the .25-06 and .308 Handi rifles but have never had a shot at game with either.  Hopefully that will change this season as I still have 4 more tags to fill and intend to fill at least 3 of them.  I'm going to swap out the .30-30 barrel and put the .45-70 barrel on and see if I can get something with it this year as well.  I did shoot a small feral hog with it after deer season last hunting season.

Good one.  The deer in Montana are so fat there has to be a pretty big hole to show much blood on the ground, it seems.  Good luck with the next 4.  DP
