Question about 260 Rem.
« on: December 31, 2009, 02:27:33 AM »
I am trying to sell my Encore 243 and thinking of a 260 to replace it. Is a 260 all it's hyped up to be? Any info would be great.
Thanks
David

I like mine, I also have a 7mm-08.

now can I look at anyone with a straight face and tell them the 260 can do something that the 7mm-08 can't?

no.

The .260 is a great long-range shooting cartridge.  I personally think that it is best suited as more of a target round, but it is very efficient on most animals that you can hunt.  With the higher BC .264 bullets launched at decent velocities it will hold more energy than a .308 past 600yards or so, and stay supersonic for a couple of hundred yards longer.  It gives you this type of performance with roughly about 3/4 the recoil of a .308 too.  It also is easy on barrels compared to the .243/6.5x284 for long range shooting.

The round carries enough energy to be used on deer sized game out around 600 or so, possibly longer depending on bullet type, BC and velocity.  I would definitely prefer the .260 to .243 for hunting.  They are pretty neck and neck when it comes to the target shooting world.

I stressed over the same decision a couple of months ago...243 or .260.  I eventually went with a .260.

I think the 260 would be a great round for a reloader.  I have yet to find 260 ammo in a store.  Around my neck of the woods, anyway.

I shoot a 260 and love it.Mine is a Rem model 7 CDL .It is a great woods rifle, short ,very lite, and plenty of power for deer and black bear with realitively mild recoil. I have shot every thing from 85 grn hp to the 160 grn rnd nose thru it.I have found only 2 draw backs. Factory ammo isn't available every where and is expensive. And 2 when at the range  for sighting in or practice, the light contour barrel heats up rapidly so I have to wait for it to cool after as little as 3 shots.  I reload my own ammo which keeps down the cost, and reform 243 and 7mm-08 brass to .260.

Thanks for the input. I think I am going to get a Model 7 260 if I can get my Encore sold.
