Rossi 92/Win 92 interchangablity?
« on: November 23, 2003, 03:25:18 PM »
I'm having a problem with my Rossi 92. Trigger was heavy and rough new. For the price, I never expected anything more. Had a trigger job done. It was great for a couple hundred rounds. Then it went away. Gunsmith redid it for free. Lasted for a while, then it went away. Took it to a different smith. He told me Brazilian guns are noted for the soft steel. Did a trigger job and told me it probably wouldn't last. It lasted 23 rounds.
Took it back and had him harden it. Lasted about 50 rounds. Now I'm thinking that some parts of the Rossi interchange with a Winchester 1892. Could putting a Winchester hammer in it be the solution to my problem? Will they interchange? I'd love to have an orginal 1892, but limited income precludes that dream.

I shoot a Rossi 92 in 357 mag for 3 years doing Cowboy Silhouette.  The triger was on the light side right out of the box.  In the last 3 summers I have probably put 5000 rounds through the gun and the trigger has remained the same, light and crisp.  I have not put a guage on it but it has really great for competitive shooting.  According to John Taffin and Paco Kelley the metal on these guns is better than most and they are stronger than the Marlins and Winchesters.

I would think there is something else wrong with your trigger and maybe you should have sent it back to Rossi when you first had trouble with it.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I believe the problem was NOT with the rifle but with your gunsmith who didn't know what he was doing. He most likely ruined the parts on the first try. You'll really need to replace the parts he ruined and start over with someone who knows what they are doing.

Pretty sure the parts were case hardened which is really only a surface hardening process. That's not bad but it does complicate matters if the gunsmith doesn't really know what he is doing. S&W has been using the process on triggers and hammers forever it seems and they have some of the best actions on the market. BUT if you get heavy handed when working on it you remove all of the hard surface and it sure sounds like that's just what's happened to yours.

I have concluded that the hammer needs to be replaced. Because, having it reworked and casehardened hasn't been the solution. Does the sear need to be replaced too.? Can they be replaced with Winchester M 92 parts? If it was your choice would you go with Rossi parts or Winchester parts?
I don't know if the orginal smith who did the work screwed it up or not. He has a good reputation. I am personally aware of him doing the triggers on 5 Rossi's, 6 Marlins, 2 Winchesters, a Remington, 2 Henry's, and 3 TC Contenders. All are shot regularly at our silhouette matches (Hunter's Pistol & Lever Action).  I do believe it was defective from the factory as my brother's rifle, a consecutive serial # to mine, was better to start with. They were about the same after being done by the same smith. His has stayed the same. I have another Rossi, a carbine. I wasn't complaining about Rossi firearms. But given a choice between an orginal Winchester in good shape and a Rossi configured the same who wouldn't choose the Winchester?

Don't think the parts are interchangeable. I'd go with Rossi parts.

About the only part that will fit both the Rossi and Winchester is the finger lever.

I thought this fellow was putting together a list of interchangeable parts but didn't see it you may check with him but I think the others are right. Sean
