Good cheap 223 ammo
« on: November 10, 2009, 05:21:41 AM »
I bought some of the Monarch steel cased ammo with a 55 gr, FMJBT bullet at Academy. It was on sale for $3.99 a box.  At any rate I have shot some of this stuff before and the last batch I got was a bit dirty and not so good shooting. This lot however seems to shoot pretty good, around an inch and a half at 100 yards. It is loaded with what appears to be a very long steel jacketed boat tailed bullet, well made actually. I needed some expanding ammo so I pulled the fmjbt bullets and replaced them with 53gr. Sierra HP's and 55gr. Sierra semi pointed bullets. I shot the 53's first, easy extraction and hit to point of aim. Same with the 55. These bullets were seated way out there hopefully to get near the rifling but I can't really say how close I got. At any rate I got some pretty cheap accurate ammo.

....THE BEST/MOST ACCURATE .223 AMMO I HAVE EVER RUN ACROSS WAS SELLIER AND BELLOT SOFT-POINT 55 GRAIN FODDER.....BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN ANYONE IN THE USA OFFER IT FOR SALE IN ABOUT 12 YEARS.

PERHAPS THE FEDERAL CLASSIC SOFT POINT WOULD TURN IN GOOD ACCURACY .....I KNOW THAT THE GUY OVER ON GUNBLAST HAD TREMENDOUS LUCK WITH WINCHESTER 55-GRAIN BLACK BOX SUPREME .223 ....BUT IT IS NOT CHEAP BY ANY STRETCH...........

Initial testing was done at 50 yards and it ooked just fine. Number of rounds fired was small though. I went to the gun range yesterday to fine tune at 100 yards. Started shooting the Monarch stuff with the 55 gr. bullet and got 3 different groups in three different vertical places 9 inches apart. May have to pull bullets and weigh powder charges to stop this. However similarly done XM193 ammo was beautifully accurate so I sighted in with it topped with a 50 grain Sierra soft point. I got three three shots touching groups with this ammo. The forearm is only O ring bedded but I may leave it alone for a while. Trigger is also a bit tough and I will fix that shortly.
