Has anyone heard the anything about Savage bringing back the M99?  The M99 would be a natural for the WSM and WSSM line of cartridges.  What do you Savage followers think?  Lawdog

Lawdog,

I prefer to be optimistic generally, but I just don't believe The Savage Co. will ever recreate the M99......not with existing USA made capabilities.  Too expensive to produce (which is why they went to the clip model and started using some god-awful excuse for wood stocks in their post one million s/n's.  Actually, had they survived, the short magnums would have been a great update and boost in sales.  Maybe someone else will buy the manufacturing rights somewhere down the road???

savageT........Have you hugged a '99 lately?

Of all the things I've lost in my life, I miss my mind the most.

I don't believe Savage will ever give up manufacturing rights to the 99.  I've heard they occasionally produce a run of them and its possible to buy a new-in-box 99 if you're in the right place at the right time.  Of course, I don't think I'd want one over the older models.  The exception is that I'd probably tolerate a pretty crappy stock and clip if they offered a new model in .358 Winchester.  They are just too tough to come by in older models and getting quite expensive.  Mine is a 1950 model eg in .300 Savage and I can't see them doing anything like that rifle today.

I guess its conceivable that they would let an importer do the gun and market it themselves like they're presently doing with a Stevens labeled double barrel shotgun made by Baikal of Russia.  Thats the only way I think you would see a rotary-magazine and walnut stock.  Even then its an unlikely scenario.

With the number of reasonably priced, used 99's still available, I can't imagine buying a new one, at what they would cost.
I picked up a 1910 vintage Savage 99 in a takedown model, 300 Savage cal. a couple weeks ago, for $260, with a Lyman receiver sight. It shoots and looks great!
I know if they brought them back, they'd be 2-3 times that price!
Ballard, the great American Rifles!

Marlinman :  Consider yourself a vary lucky man to get the rifle for that price, in the NE would be amost 3x that if in the condition you described and down here in the south at least 2x that figure, consider yourself a blessed man. :D    JIM
