Where to hit em with 255 gr. Kieth SW cast hard
« on: November 30, 2009, 04:42:34 AM »
My 44 mag Handi Rifle is up next. I am shooting 22.0 grs of IMR 4227 under a Keith 255 gr. semi wadcutter. Should I shoot for bone or will it work well enough with rib cage hits?

The hard cast should be kept for tougher game like hogs or black bear and make a shoulder shot. Hardcast just won't expand. Now a lead gas check of a heavy weight driven hard are just a great rounds to make a heart lung shot and typicaly can just roll a deer. The lead gas check bullets will expand to twice its size an do the job you want.

i've been thinking about this same thing all weekend, i recently decided my boy wouldn't be able to use his topper 30/30 yet again this year for safety reasons so i picked up a used marlin 1894 44mag only ammo on hand was american eagle 240gr HP i'm afraid a shoulder shot will destroy alot of meat so i was trying to figure out if a lung/rib cage area shot might be better?

as far as your ?  hard cast swc will penetrate pretty deep probably straight through with little or no expansion i personally would go lower 1/3  just in front of leg or just behind it

It'll put em down fine with a heart/lung shot.  IF it runs, won't be to far and the tracking will be easy with the blood trail.  DP

Gotta' figure that even if it doesn't expand, it still is more than twice the size of a 243 that doubles on impact, and it will release a lot of energy as it passes through.  If you hit a vital with a 44 cal. slug, you will have a dead deer IMO.
