First post, been reading kinda all day, but not sure which one to go with. To tell you what i would like to get into:

Deer Hunting
Possibly Bear Hunting in the next year or so
Target Shooting (200+ yards)

What caliber rifle would you all suggest, what make and model, How much should i look to get, and which rifles are easily modifyable?

A Rem 700 30-06. Since you said easily to modify I said a Remington M700 bolt rifle. They are like Chevy trucks, more aftermarket parts and accerories than anything else. 30-06 ammo can be found anywhere and it is about as much recoil as the average new shooter can take without flinching. A 2x7 or 3x9 scope to round it out. Dave

First let me Welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors.  The best forum on the net for hunters/shooters going today, my opinion.  Now to your question.  You want to hunt deer, possibly bear and do target shooting at somewhat longer ranges, right?  Assuming that the ranges you are going to be shooting game at is about the same as the targets you want to shoot I would go with cartridge something like the 7mm-08 or .308 as both are very accurate and have plenty of punch for deer and Black Bear.  I picked these two cartridges due to both being popular at silhouette matches and the ease of reloading and ammo availability.  As for the rifle, it all depends on what your pocket can afford.  You can get a very accurate Savage from $350.00 to a custom job that could set you back thousands.  "easily modifiable" fits many such as the before mentioned Savage, Ruger, Remington, Winchester, etc. to a good 98 Mauser.  Need a little more information on what you can afford and a little more on what you want to end up with.  Again Welcome Aboard.  Lawdog

:D I also say "Welcome"  to one of my favorite places.  I am a real 30-06 fan but like Lawdog said . . . when you have target shooting as one of your criteria I too would go with the 7M-08 or 308.  Probably leaning more to the 7M-08.  There are no deer or black bear that a 140gn out of a 7M-08 wont easily take care of and then you can shoot 120gn for target.  For an all around caliber I would look there.

A medium weight short action rifle in 7-08  or 308. Both good and relatively inexpensive to shoot rounds, suitable for Target shooting out to about 800 yards and mid sized game. A Remington 700 short action is probably the most versatile when considering after market replacement parts, stocks etc.

If you look real close at the ballistics of the 7mm-08, it is a great round. A 140 grain bullet loaded down 2500 fps it is very close to a .243 in recoil and still has plenty energy to kill deer out to 200 yds, or you can take it up to .270 ballistics ( 3000 fps) and retain over 1200 energy at 500 yards. Select the proper bullet and it will do most anything one would want for mis sized to large animals.

I would suggest the .308. This cartridge will suffice for deer and black bear. It is a great target round, and for informal target shooting there is plenty of inexpensive surplus ammo available.
As for a rifle, I would suggest researching based on your personal preferences and then going to a store where you can at least handle the firearms you are interested in and perhaps shoot them before you buy.

Bikerboy :  If this is your FIRST rifle dont spend all your hard earned money on a high priced rifle stay with the basics rem. 700 / ruger 77 / win 70, and stay away from the magnums at first it takes awhile to be profecient with a magnum alot of shooters thought they could and you can find alot more used magnums on the dealers shelfes than anything, the 7mm-08 / 308 / 30-06 in that order for me to begin with. :D    JIM

I have to agree with JHM if this is your FIRST rifle.  I would probably start witha Remington 700 ADL Synthetic in 270 or 30-06.  Good Luck

HEY!

Don't forget the 6.5x55 is a target caliber and a hunting caliber.  With 140 grain bullets, it will take deer, bear, and more.  And it is one of the best sub-thirty caliber, starting out, target calibers.

It depends on what bear you are going to hunt.
If it is black bear the above info is on target. If you are talking griz you need to rachet up a bit.

I would suggest that you get it in a Savage.  They are extremely accurate rifles out of the box.

I would not recommend a blind magazine for a novice. Having to run every round through the chamber is something I don't like after over 30 years of hunting. Dave
