I need a new barrel for deer
« on: November 11, 2009, 01:55:51 AM »
I have a 243 win now bought 2 years ago been trying to get it to shoot for 2 years tried about every helpful solution on this site.  I am giving up on it.  I  would like to buy a new barrel, what would you guys recommend?  I thought about a 7mm 08 or a 25 06 please let me know what kind of problems you have had with either of these or you were happy with them. I don't want to have to tinker with them anymore if at all possible.

Thanks:
Ken

Welcome  Ken,  I don't comment on these kind of questions because there is so much good information in the FAQs.  The only thing that I have seen right from the start , even with a brand new gun is if you remove the forend and grip the barrel right above the forend attachment lug and with your other hand grip the frame and try to feel for play with the barrel locked up.  If it's even a little loose you will most likely waste a lot of ammo trying to get something to group well for you.
The .243 , 7-08, and 25-06 are good deer calibers but are all higer pressure cartridges and can be less tolerant of looseness or latch engagement than say a 30-30.
If the barrel is nice and tight when closed,  all I can say is I FEEL YOUR PAIN, nobody wants to spend a ton of time and money on a gun that shoots lousy.   Jed

Some where along the line  everyone will end up with a lemon . Sounds like you did . Out of the 12 Ruger77s I have owned only one ( a 243 ) would not shoot no matter what i did . I had one HR Ultra in 308  that would not shoot either out of many I own and 7 my best friend owns .
Either cartridge you mention should do fine  My friends 25/06 HR ultra is  a tack driver with 117 Bullets but will not shoot worth spit  with the 100s.  I have a 30-30 barrel for one of my frames  that would not shoot until I used 150 RN bullets or 150 TSXFP Barnes , or  170 Grain Winchester Factory  everything else is horrible .
Most need "some tinkering "   but its usually worth it

I guess I'd have to know what distance you'll be shooting.  The straight walls, pistol calibers, and the .45-70 and .444 all seem to shoot well.  My .45-70, .44 Mag (.445 SM) and my .357s Mag and Max are hands down my best shooters.  I don't think you can beat the .357 Maximum for versatility.

You also didn't mention if you have anything in a plain ole vanilla .30/06 - that'd enable you totake ANYTHING in CONUS-48.

Picking up a .30/06
a .223Rem
.45/70
and 20 or 12ga would begin to cover ALL needs and niches.

Hi KEM-,
I'm in Minn too and tossed around this same issue myself just this spring. The set-up is/was for my 16yr son and I wanted something with a light(er) recoil yet the proper over-all ballistics needed for our Minn whitetail and varied terrain.
The trajectory ballistics of the two are what we here in Minn call "a horse apiece". As far as average recoil they are literally right next to each other on the charts.
I opted for the 7-08, primarily for bullet weight choices with "off the shelf" ammo available. The 25-06 had mostly small 110-120grn, a little on the light side for our hardy northern whitetail, vrs the 140-150 in 7-08.
Bullet diameter is .284 and that alone speaks volumes. After Dustin harvested his forkhorn this year near Thief River Falls at 300yrds, I am VERY happy with the choice, NO REGRETS!!
The boy is an experianced shooter and made the comment he has no flinch with the gun. Which I poo-poo becasue if I dry loaded and handed it too him I'm sure we'd see something, but the point, it is a very manageable load for him.
As an added aside, his great Uncle Donny who's land they hunted, has been a hand loader for decades and just this year won a 25-06 in a raffle. That gent used four letter words when talking about 25-06 performance, the new rifle is a delegated tractor gun.
Scroll back a few pages on this forum and you can read a few posts about the 7-08.

Anything with a rim won't require tinkering to get it to shoot good.

I have the 7mm-08 and I'm here to tell you that if you get one, you will not regret doing so.  I right now am 2 whitetail down with this cartridge and it just does not mess around.  Very light recoil, easy to steady and the trigger does not need any work to speak of.  This caliber could be used from kids to grandmothers with dads and granddad's thrown in there.

I hope this helps.

I go along with the 7mm-08 for this.  I have 4 of em and 2,25-06's.  I like em both, but do prefer the 7mm's, they perform very well.  DP

+1 on the 7-08. I have one and it is a good shooter. Like a previous poster said you won't regret it.

I handload both and I'd opt for the 7mm-08 as well..
