.243 factory loads.....what to try???
« on: November 02, 2009, 08:02:59 AM »
What are some .243 factory loads I should try to getting shooting in my handi??

I've prob. only shot a 1/2 a box of federal 80gr SP and 1/2-3/4 box of winchester 100gr SP since I bought the gun new...neither shot well.

Would it be better to invest in some Win Supreme SST 95s or Hornaday Custom SST 95s??  I don't shot often, but want to hit what's in my sights.

I'm not a reloader nor do I plan on it.

Thanks!!

See the Best Factory Ammo thread in the FAQs.

When you say "sights", I suspect you may have a 20" Superlight 243 which won't shoot more than two shots well unless the forend is bedded, it heats up fast and subsequent shots will be well away from the first two, keep it cool and you shouldn't have a problem. For deer hunting, you shouldn't need more than one or two shots at the most anyway.  ;)

"sights" was a figure of speech.....The rifle has no sights and is scoped. ;D

I will check it out.

Should I be looking heavy or light bullet weights??

It could still be a Superlight if it's a 20" barrel, they make them both ways. Try both, I've got four 243 H&Rs, some like 95gr and heavier, others like 90gr and lighter, you'll just have to find out what yours likes, use the ammo thread in the FAQs as a starting point.

Thanks for the help!!  The barrel is a 22".  I'm assuming it the standard barrell??

How many rounds typically are shot through a barrel before it is considered 'broke-in'??

Break-in can be anytime from out-of-the box to 200 rounds, my .444 shot extremely well direct from the factory, I don' know how many rounds the shot thru it as it was the first 1:20" they made and tested, but I suspect they shot no more than one box of each thru it, Rem 240gr, Hornady 265gr Light Mag LE and 265gr FP, all shot 1-1½" groups. You can check the barrel to see how rough it is by pushing a dry patch thru the bore and look for threads snagged by the rough spots, you can shoot it to smooth it up, or you can speed things up a little by polishing the bore using the techniques listed in the FAQs.
