Rifle build dedicated small game.
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:56:22 AM »
As much as I like DYI projects I've never been too interested in a DYI rifle. I have to admit though the "stub bug" has taken a bite and I think I am about to start a .38/.357 stub project. I have a Ultra stock, receiver and forend already (never used) just needed a blank and a donor barrel. To day the blanks arrived 18 3/4 long bull barrels stainless steel already chambered but need crowning. This will be a threaded job and hopefully quite well done as I have friends with the tooling to get done what I need done. I've still got to find the donor barrel (rifle) and get things started. These blanks are a 1" in 20" and that is what I was looking for to shoot light cast slugs, as light as .74 gr., it will be a dedicated small game, barn, and plinking rifle.

I won't be rushing into this still have to line up my tool guys, and I have questions like how long should the stub be?. Any and all advice, pictures etc. would be welcome.

You will discover it is easiest to cut the donor barrel at about 19 inches and do all the work on the stub portion while it is long, then just cut off the stub, probably about an inch in front of where the chamber swell starts, don't bore clear through to where you are going to cut it, then you can fine tune the diameter of the hole where the stub front sholders on the barrel.  Also, you will probalby end up cutting the chamber again to get the rim flat with the breach and allowing for getting the stub tightened up on the barrel.  Larry

Joe,

Take Larry's advice to heart... when it comes to stubbing these Handi's he knows what he is talking about.
I have one of his barrels and his work is beautiful.
Whatever you do or however you do it... make if SAFE!!

Are you using the Tap and Die method?
Sounds great Joe. Let us know how it turns out for you.

Aaron,

I haven't decided yet, this is all new to me. I'm reading on it as much as I can. I'll keep posting as time goes on. Thanks.
