Sighting in with clay's??
« on: October 12, 2003, 10:39:59 AM »
An article I read recently said he used clay's to sight in at 300+yard's. Not a bad idea besause you know where you hit, can see the target well and you don't have to mess with a spotter/scope.
But how do you set up this kind of target? Apparently they were arranged in rows making a square pattern.  How do you pin them to something without the shock of impact breaking the other's?  ANyone?

We used claybirds in a muzzle loader match some years ago.  As I remember we simply drove two small nails into the target backer and sat the bird on top..

They are good for practice, but not for sighting in. You can only know exactly where the bullets are hitting if you have a paper target to show precisely how far from the bullseye you are hitting.  After I've sighted in, I switch to clays.  It's fun to see them disappear.

If I can hit a clay at 300 yards - I don't care how close I came to the center.  My hunting distance is 300 yards and a hit on a clay means a hit on anything that I hunt.  Unless it's a skinny antelope a lookin at me.
