.223 Ultra with Nosler 55gr Ballistic tip did good.
« on: October 11, 2009, 07:28:03 PM »
Went out tonight cruising along the overflow channel.  I have a permit to remove neusence beaver.  Trapping don't work since people during the day spring or steal the traps.  Hiking and Bike paths all around this area, with lots of greenie do goods.  I have been shooting them with a .17 HMR and a .22RF.  When shot they dive and stay down.  It takes two hours for the gas to build up enough for them to float.  If shot in the early mornings I go back two to three hours later and pull them out by snagging them with a fishing rod, and reeling them into the bank.  If I shoot them in the evening I have to wait till morning to retrieve them.  The problem there is that either bears or coyotes may get to them first.

Due to a bear being out there last night I decided to take the .223 Ultra along.  With a 60gr Nosler Partition I felt I could handle a Black Bear or a small Grizzly.  When the Beaver came out I loaded a .55gr Nosler Ballistic tip.  100 yard shot, hit the Beaver in the body, killed the Beaver instantly.  Beaver did not dive, it continued to float.  Was able to get a canoe out there and retrieve it tonight.  No worry about something else getting it over night.

Real pleased with the results and performance of that Ballistic Tip on Beaver.  Enough body mass to absorb the impact and not get a pass through, unlike a fox.

Gosh, I like that Ultra.  Even with it White to camo it for snow it is working now at night great.

Yeah Sour ,

I wouldnt suspect your beavers to be built much different to our beavers here in arkansas .. Last one i handled was a big male and was built like a brick crapper .. I had always heard that a beaver could break a mans leg with its tail and it wasnt till that big male that i really believed that that was possible ;)
 Congrats on a winning combo.

My uncle shot and killed his black bear with his .223 Rem loaded with a 55-gr FMJ placed under the chin.  I don't believe this was the best bullet for the job, but it did put down a rather bulky 175 pound black bear that dropped at the shot.

As of yesterday, I also carry a S&W460 on my belt.  Excitement is one thing, but a death wish, I think not.  I have no doubt I could drop this Bear with the .223.  While I was sitting in my truck this morning waiting for daylight the bear came back out and was eating grass along the channel.  As it got lighter I was able to tell, it is a small Grizzly, I'd say a two year old.

Also saw eight Cow Moose, and Two bulls, out in the meadow along the channel.  Watched them for about an hour.  The bulls were chasing the cows around, and the bigger bull would chase the smaller one then go back to chasing the cows.

The Beaver did not show this morning.  Last night while we were picking up the one I had shot there was another one swimming around and splashing with it's tail.  Could not see good enough in the dark to shoot it then.  The one I got last night is a small one, I'd say 25 to 30 lbs.
