Barnes 450gr TSX and the BC. Making it Work?
« on: October 08, 2009, 08:30:42 PM »

I'm laying off the black rifles for awhile and turning my attention to my BC.  Once my new job catches up with my to-do list, I've got a couple things in store for my BC.

Has anyone here tried to do this?

I have an idea for how to make the 450gr TSX work in the BC.  Sort of.  Here's the bullet I'm looking at.
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=820040

I'm going to make a jig to hold the bullet still and shorten the 450 TSX to 425 or 400 grains. I think I can use a cheap endmill in a drill press to shorten the base of the bullet and use a chamfer tool to put a bevel in the bullet by hand.
Working with the soft copper shouldn't be a problem.  Just go slow.

I'm hoping to get the bullet short enough to fit in the BCs chamber and leave enough room in the case to make up a decent load without throating the chamber.

However, if I have too, I'll throat the chamber.  There is a 'smith in town that will do the throating fairly inexpensively if needed.

I'm guessing it will still be far more aerodynamic than the 350gr TSX and still have enough power to knock Godzilla back into the bay.

Any flaws in this plan?  Think it'll work?

Thanks

ZM

I don't know if it will work or not. (Well, it will work, how accurate is the issue for starters)  I'm assuming you're dealing with a 45-70 since the bullet is .458. I'm just gonna throw this out there.  I do not know why anyone would use a bullet in a 45-70 over 300 grains unless they anticipate a charging elephant. (Or moose or grizzly, you get the idea) Do you have a pile of these bullets? Short of that, I wouldn't bother. I hear of people using heavier bullets for deer and I have yet to figure out why, unless that particular bullet is more accurate in their gun. What do you plan to hunt? Not only is that bullet very expensive, it appears to be less than desirable for a lot of North American game. If you follow through with the plan, let me know.  I'm always up for learning something new. You've got a very interesting concept and we may all learn something new.  Kudo's for even thinking of it! Give us some more details as to why you thought of this.

Why am I doing this?

Why not?

I like the TSX in other calibers.

A 400gr TSX seems like a slam dunk for a 45/70.  A sleeker bullet for the old warhorse seems like a good idea to me.

I'm waiting for parts for another project, so I have to do something until the parts arrive.

It's purely a technical exercise.  I doubt I'll use this combo to hunt anything unless the results are very encouraging.

So, is this what you're trying to do?:

Deo duce, ferro comitante
With God as my leader and my sword as my companion
