45-70 boggle
« on: October 04, 2009, 05:04:32 PM »
I have a question for you guys. Today I took my 45-70 encore out to make sure that it was
sighted in, along with 2 other barrels. When I got done with the 45-70,I went to switch barrels
and noticed that the 2 forend screws were bent, and that the hole in the barrel were tore up pretty bad.
The 2 screws were tight , and OK before  shooting it.
Has anyboby had this happen to them ?  And any ideas on how to fix it ?   thanx   mc

Well, I'm probably not much help on this one,

I don't have an Encore, but in Contender I have a 45-70 bbl. Mine's never had these kinds of issues.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way you're holding/resting the gun? Could you describe your shooting technique? I'm wondering if you're somehow "locking down" the fore end to shoot it, and this time the screws were backed off inadvertently, causing the screws to bend?

Dunno on this one...

As to the fix, sounds like you need new screws and new inserts for that barrel.

How's the fore end? tweaked, or still usable?

Unfortunately I feel like this is a weakness of the Encore.  It is designed and built to handle heavier, more powerful rounds and yet the forearm is attached with much smaller screws than the Contender forearm ???.  They are screwed directly into the barrel vs. the Contender's bosses which of course are dovetailed into the barrel.  I have managed to loosen the dovetail on a very few barrels over the years...but tap, tap with a brass mallet and we're good to go again.  I probably loosened the dovetail by tightening the screws too much anyway vs. the effects of recoil.
It's also my understanding that this same issue was the actual reason for the long delay in Pachmyer grips for the Encore as well.  They couldn't get the forearm to stay in place, hence the lighter "magnum" forend.  Both of their forends are considerably lighter than their recoil absorbing forend for the Contender.
I would call TC and pass the problem on to them and at least see what they say.

After you get the screw hole fixed or the barrel replaced us a couple strips of supervisors tape between the barrel and foreend.
Makes barrel swapping more difficult but no more problems.

Wow,

I did not know they didn't use the dovetailed inserts on the Encore barrels. Bummer. That's what I get for opening my yap when I don't know what I'm talking about.

 ;D

Sorry guys, you'd think I'd learn to keep quiet...

I broke one on my 25-06 encore. It had a tripod adapter on the front swivel, but no tripod. I think it snagged on a sandbag.

Thanx for the input. I think that it was a combo of several things. The swivel stud, and the fact that the screws are  (IMO) too small, plus the recoil..
I e-mailed MGM and asked how to fix it, drill bigger holes or hanger bar.

Thanx again       mc

You need to get the "Magnum" Pachmayr forend.  Even if you drill bigger holes they will not be deep enough to help you and a hanger bar will allow you to use a different forend BUT it is usually held in place with only 1 screw.  I've been down that road already.  I shoot 3 different .500 S&W barrels on my Encore and have a 50 AK on order.  The only cure that I have found is:

A)     Use Pachmayr "magnum" forend.

B)     Use Stratton hanger bar for  Encore RIFLE, this has 3 screws (need to drill one more on barrel) to hold it to the barrel
and uses 2 screws to attach forend.  I usually glass bed the bar into the forend and use JB Weld to hold the hanger to the barrel
        in addition to the screws.

If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.
