460 S&W/454 Casull/45LC??
« on: September 23, 2009, 10:44:27 AM »
I understand You can shoot 454 Casull and 45LC in a barrel chambered for 460S&W. I am interested in this barrel for that reason, 460 for heavy shooting or hunting and I can tone it down if I wanted, but someone on one of the other post mentioned a problem with the 454 and 45 having to reach for the rifling. Is this going to cause a problem with accuracy or why was he questioning the use of the shorter rounds in the 460. I see no difference in the shorter rounds having a space before rifling in a Encore barrel, and a 460 in a revolver has a gap before the bullet contacts rifling. Am I wrong?

Yeah. You are wrong. With any longer lead in a barrel, the bullet has the chance to tilt and enter the rifling on a cant, thus sending it down range not spinning on it's center. The result is less accurate groups.

You also will get fouling or even erosion of the chamber that's ahead of the shorter rounds.  You can shoot 45 Colt and 454 Casull rounds in a 460 S&W Magnum Chamber but my advice would be to save that for an emergency.  Buy 460 S&W cases and load them down if you like.  Better yet, if you can't take the recoil, then don't buy the barrel.  If you're going to hunt with it, you shouldn't be too scared to practice with it.

I'm with Grumulkin on this one. If you buy a 460 barrel, then why aren't you shooting 460 loads? Even lighter loads can be re-loaded and shot.

I shoot 44 magnum a bunch. I don't load up and shoot 44 special rounds out of it. If I wanted to shoot the 44 special, I would'a bought a 44 special.

If you want to shoot 45LC, then buy a 45LC barrel and shoot it.

How about " MONEY" ,  thats a good reason to shoot the 45C and not the 460
I never loaded cast for my 460...240gr XTP/MAGs.....at almost around $30 per hundred..........vs a 255 gr cast in the 45C for 35 bucks per 250 from Hunters supply.  (don't quote me on that, I haven't looked at their prices lately)  I do agree he needs to shoot the 460 and not be afraid of it....but even shooting a 22 will afford practice at trigger control and the basics of handgun shooting.    Sorry...OMHO   regards IROLD
