H&R Ultra .25-06
« on: September 29, 2009, 03:55:36 PM »
My .450 Marlin Ultra is now a switch-barrel with a 26" .25-06 barrel.
I shipped it on 28 Aug 2009, and got it back on 9-21-2009. WOW!
I've only tested one load so far. Using a Hornady 87 grain bullet, Reloder17 powder, R-P brass, and a Federal 210 primer I got a .456" three-shot group at 100 yards. Velocity was 3449 FPS.

Before testing loads, I "broke in" the barrel. I fired and cleaned after each of five shots. There was NO copper fouling after any shot. I've never had a barrel shoot that clean! I then fired seven shots without cleaning, and went home to clean it "really good". I still didn't get any copper fouling!

What kind of barrels are they using? Or did I just get lucky?

You bet I'm pleased!!! ;D

Wow !!! That's great!!! I think you will love the 25-06.. It can be super accurate and fairly economical to load as well.  I've had good luck with Hornady 117 gr. SST and H4350.  I think the 25-06 in heavier bullet weight is happier with slower burning powder.  I 've heard/read that it really shines with H4831 in 100 gr. bullets and up.  The nice thing about the 25-06 is that it can be a smokin' varmit rifle one minute, and a good 350 yard deer rifle the next, depending on how you load it.  Also, recoil doesn't beat you up either.. Have fun, and keep us posted !!!!
