10-22 triggers
« on: May 29, 2009, 03:30:55 AM »
I have a 10-22 that shoots great. the trigger is just a bit stiff. I have done several trigger jobs on m-77 rugers that turned out nice. Have not had much luck with the 10-22. took apart and polished up several times and don't seem to be getting better. Are these triggers workable or do I need to look towards aftermarket kits and/or triggers.  Some of the triggers I'v seen cost more than the rifle did.

all you need is an aftermarket hammer. mine is a volquartzen. I used the factory springs instead of the springs that came with it. it dropped the trigger pull from 8 pounds down to 2 pounds.

+1 on volquartzen.  There are volquartzen on midway for any mod you want to do.  I put in a new trigger kit in my 10-22 for $40 or $50 and it's very nice now.  I would strongly recommend it, and it's not hard to put it all in.

I used a Power Customs trigger kit about 8 years ago and it really spoiled me. Now Accutriggers feel heavy

Another recommendation on the volq hammer only. Mine was like the above gentleman's, 8# factory under 3# after. Most likely around 2-2.5 but no scale at time. I buffed up with dremel. Now it breaks at 18 oz.

I have done trigger / action jobs on a half dozen 10/22's in the past month or so. With a little stoning & polishing in the right places you can get the factory parts to feel better than a Volquartsen drop in Hammer.

The reason I say that is I also did one just putting a Volquartsen Hammer in it. Yep it dropped the pull weight but felt really mushy. I took it apart and did the mods to the Volquartsen Hammer that I had done to the factory hammers (plus polishing the disconnector, sear and trigger spring plunger) and NOW I have a really great feeling trigger.

There are complete instructions on another site on how to do all these modifications, plus the Auto Bolt Modification as well as Radiusing / Chamfering the rear lower surface of the bolt (this helps when shooting Sub Sonic Ammo to prevent stove pipes).

I reworked my issue trigger easily - but my gun was bought in 1972, and the later guns' triggers might be a little different by now, in either design or material, which could give the difficulty you mention.

They have a bunch of mods you can do yourself. I did all kinds of work on mine.

I second the Kidd trigger. It is easily the best I have seen for the 10/22.

I second this site...I spend a lot of time there.  I worked my brother in law's trigger down to a smooth crisp just under 3 lb pull with those instructions.

There is considerable on-line info for diy'ing the 10/22.  OEM parts can made to work just fine.  The set screw sear mod is one of the best.  I have my trigger down to 8oz on my bench gun, 3.5lbs on my field guns, all with oem parts.
