square breech face and accuracy
« on: September 18, 2009, 03:24:36 PM »
My 2nd hand .243 (regular) seemed to shoot all over the place. First cold shot would go OK, then the next would be 8 or 10 inches high and 5 inches right. !!!!!!!!!!! I tried the shims, looked for any loose mounts and all.
Finally I looked at the face of the barrel, it seemed to be "polished" on the right side, so I used my educated fingernail and found that there seemed to be a slight roughness on that side.  I stoned the rough spot off, and also put thicker shims under the foreend.  After work it shot 80 grains into the same spot at 25 yards (allowing for my aged eyes) even when hot.  I didn't try at 100 because the sun gets too low at my range which looks south, and the wife is gone for a couple days so the dogs need attention./  Tomorrow I qwill try at 100, and also try 100 gr loads.  I realize I fixed 2 things at once but am trying to get this thing ready for antelope in 2 weeks.  Also, the 3-9 Bushnell Sportview seemed to shoot OK at both 3 and 9.  I keep kicking myself for buying cheap variable scopes; that should be another thread about the lack of budget 1.5 or 2 to 7's.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Good luck I think you are on your way to a good shooter.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

A year so so ago we did a little experment by squaring up the the breach and putting a proper crown on the muzzel of Handi barrels.  Seems the results were about a 30% reduction in group size, I don't remember what the name of the thread was.  Larry
