7.62R-6mm AI ? been done?
« on: September 23, 2009, 08:59:40 AM »
I was wondering if a 7.62 russian had been necked down to a 6mm AI for some or the single shot break top rifles. Having a rim and plenty of brass available? eddiegjr

It's kinda big for a 6mm. 30-30 ack imp necked to 6mm (ala 6mm Bullberry or Eben Brown's 6mm benchrest mag) works quite well though.

Are we talking 7.62x54R or 7.62x39mm?  If we're talking 7.62x39, the .220 Russian was based off of it, or maybe the other way around, I'm fuzzy on that, and the .220 Russian was the basis for both the .22 and 6mm PPC.

If we're talking 7.62x54R, I don't know of anyone that's done it.  I can't imagine it's any more "kinda big for a 6mm" than the 6mm-.284 or the .240 Weatherby Magnum.  It might even make for some interesting modified Mosin-Nagant rifles firing 6, 6.5 and 7mm bullets.

7.62x39 is the parent case.  A 6mm,6.5mm,7mmx54 rebarrelled mosin would be pretty nice if you could get one rebarrelled cheap enuff. And dies made cheap.  Otherwise there are to many others available to make it worth it, If I had a lathe and stuuf to do it with I would try it. ;D

There is really nothing "new under the sun" what can be done has been by someone somewhere at some time.

Thanks guy's

I'm not looking for something new, I'm looking for something old with a rim that a 6mm/243 Handi barrel can be rechambered to in a caliber that has parent brass, reamers, and reloading dies available w/o excessive cost. I ask about the 30 AI/6mm before and was told it would be expensive to build because of reamers and dies having to be custom built and not already widely used. I will look into the Bullberry a little. I wish it would be worthwhile for someone to build barrel blanks for the handies. Seems it would be like a bolt blank with the addition of a standard lug to accomidate the ejector/extractor and pivot pin, but I'm not a machineist or barrel maker.

I have seen a computer controlled machine operate and the program to build the lug would be simple, run a batch and then build something else until you needed another batch. A custom shop could build the lug to be attached to the barrel blank. A jig fixture would make the lug to barrel attachment an interchangeable mass production part. (Something I don't understand having such varried results in hinge fit in H&R's current production method). Sound reasonable?

Again thanks,eddiegjr

A change in attitude of just a little bit could have placed H&R at a different spot in history. If the company had spent the money to build barrels with bore sizes true to caliber specs H&R could be renound for accuracy as proven by the guns shooting projectiles matched to bore size rather than standard off the shelf factory fodder. Look at the 45-70, 357, and 44s of today for accuracy as proof. How much money did they make by useing oversized tools and why? The gun works very - very well just given a bullit that matches the bore. The only difference is true bore dimensions. The rest of the mechanical parts of the gun haven't changed. By just adding a latch shelf and latch that is curved to the radius of the pivot for the latch radius would add how much to the strength and accuracy of the guns? (The gun popped open when I fired it.)

H&R is the TC of the aincent past and the H&R is stronger!. The TC is just a "sexey" good looking gun that was well marketed, that is TC's only virtue. (Looks no better than a well fitted thumb hole stock on a Handi!)

By this point in time H&R could be well into the Double rifle market selling as accurate as available guns with one of the oldest time tested mechanisms and accurate arms available,at a reasonable price. Valmet tried it going after the custom market but they couldn't meet the mass market with a reasonalbe priced gun as H&R could have and still can. I just hope Remington doesn't kill a great product by being driven by corporate goals rather than common sence. Do they think firearms are gone and are just squeezing the last few drops?

I posted something here but it went poof so I'll try again.

How about a 6MMX51 Rimmed? Or would you call it a .243 rimmed win? That would be a .307 win necked down to .243.

I just ran a .308 case (same diminsions as a .307) into a .243 sizing die and got a perfect 6mm neck. The shoulder was not right tho as the .308 is a little shorter than the .243. However it looks to me that you could put a fire forming load in this case and blow the shoulder out with it then you would be able to just use .243 dies to reload them.

The only work to your handy is to  cut the rim recess on your  .243 and modify or replace the extractor/ejector. I believe CW has done this to his .308. you would then be able to shoot these home brewed rimmed cases or factory .243s.

Sounds like it would work to me and you could do all the work yourself with no special tools to reload with at all.  Prolly cost about 50 bucks to rent a reamer and cut the rim. Then buy some .307 brass and a cheap box of bullets to fireform with. You might could even go the AI route and gain a little more case cap.      I like it. Perfect for a handiieholic. ;D

eah you got me thinking about it and looking in books and then I remembered talking about the .307 in the handy forum and it just sounded like what you are wanting to do. I also see you found my post there.  I knew the sizing could be done ok but I wanted to ask the handie addicts how to do the rifle, As normal they gave what was asked. My cousin has a .243 handy I traded him, I may have to borrow it and try this myself. ;D

The 307 sounds a lot better than what I was told about the 30 30/6mm AI. Stuff available and less expensive. I want a rim for the nostalgia as well as less opportunity for problems.
thanks, eddie
