10" 357 maximum
« on: September 22, 2009, 12:53:14 PM »
I just traded for a use 357 maximum with a 356 bore. Is this a good thing with the smaller bore? Can I also use 38 and 357 magnum shells in this barrel. Where can I pick up a few 357 maximum brass to try this barrel out?
Thanks,
John B.

I have the factory max and never slugged the bore to check diameter, but it's fine with every .38 and .357 I've fed it. If yours is factory stamped I'd say you're ok.

I shoot cast bullets sized 358, lubed and gas checked out of my 10" with good results. 180-213 gr.
Do you speak German? Well I don't speak Spanish so maybe you'd better learn English.

Since you slugged your barrel and now you know it is .356 you can do some testing and see what shoots good in it.  You may discover that you need to size your cast bullets to .357 to get good results, but I doubt it.

My 10" 357 max likes most 180 to 200 gr bullets, cast or jacketed.  It kicks like a mule but can be handled.  It isn't as bad as my 14" 30-30 for recoil.

I got my brass from Midway but I have seen it in Cabelas.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I have both the contender in 357max and a Dan Wesson in that caliber and have taken deer with both guns out to 120yds with no problem.  I got all my brass on Ebay-when they still sold it.  Check out Gunbroker and Auctionarms, there's usually one or two sellers of bags of Remington brass for a good price, better if they have multiples and save on the shipping.  The only problem with shooting with 38's or 357mags is it'll develope a carbon ring at the neck of the shorter round and make it difficult to load the max without a thorough scrubbing of the chamber, also accuracy will suffer due to the long gap to the rifling.  It's better to use the max brass and load them down.  The max is a very straight shooting round and does best with the heavier bullets; 170 to 210 gr. and my best accuracy is with cast bullets.
