Whack-A-Pat day in Michigan
« on: September 15, 2009, 04:34:51 AM »
Today is the opener of grouse season here.  Don't laugh, but I'm taking my Handi .357 Maximum and raspy caller.  The foliage is way to thick for wing shooting, so I'm going to still hunt, look for pats and call coyotes. Head shots with .38s on the partridges and either mags or maxs for the yotes.  I'll undoubtedly get skunked on both, but it'll be a good day afield.

There is nothing like sitting in the woods, can't be skunked by just being in the woods.

Tim, have a great day tomorrow.  I should have been out of here an hour ago, but got tied up on the phone.

Mike, you got that right.

It does sound like a great time.  Just being in the field that is.  Leaves are changing here and that autumn smell is in the air.  Harvest time is near.  Goodluck PETE!

Hope you had a great time Pete!  No pats down here in the wrist section of the big mitten, but I remember hunting them up in Grand Traverse country.  My ammo budget went all out of whack for the amount of meat I delivered to the plate.  :D

Any day in the woods beats any day at work.

Yeah J.J., you can sure blow some holes in spruce and balsam this time of year.  I prefer the later season myself.......but, I enjoy grouse on the table too.  The only thing that makes the ammo expenditure worthwhile is that you can't buy them at the grocery store.

when i was a kid in Penna. when everybody else broke out their shotguns and huntin dogs for small game my gramdfather would sneak off by himself with his trusty winchester 22lr single shot bolt gun with iron sights to do a little huntin.....little while later he'd come back with a couple ringnecks...always shot in the head....on the ground, not in flight. Funny, nobody else ever SAW a ringneck  before it took flight, let alone shot em in the head with an iron sighted 22

DP, I sure wish we could use rifles on turkey here in Michigan, but it's shotgun only.  A buddy of mine got one with a .44 Walker a couple of years ago in Florida.  About five years ago I turkey hunted with him down there, and never thought to take a rifle.  I guess force of habit, my 12 ga. went along.

Zoner, when I was I kid at University of Maine, a friend and I were walking down a two track with .22s small game hunting.  A grouse got up and flew straight down the road.  I knew he wouldn't go far, but Ray didn't wait.  Up went his .22....bang.....down came the bird.  He grew up shooting rats with his dad on the dumps in Hoboken, NJ.  I have never since met a finer shooter.
