Boss recoil reduction
« on: May 09, 2009, 01:34:26 PM »
How effective is the Boss at reduceing recoil? I remember seeing a chart that showed the percent of reduction by caliber when it was first introduced by Browning but am unable to find that information now.

It's a very good brake, IME.  I have an A-Bolt II in 30-06, and with the brake version of the BOSS, it kicks roughly like my heavy 243.  I love it!  It is unholy loud, though.  Seriously, don't shoot one without earplugs, and don't let anyone near you go without, either.

While the BOSS certainly works as a brake, and as a tuning mechanism, I personally do not like them, and do not own any with them. A few buddies have A-Bolt Medallions in .270 and 30-06. They are very obnoxious, sound-wise. Personally, I don't see the need for a brake on any but the very largest calibers, and even then, I just handload up gradually, and practice getting used to the recoil.

The BOSS is a fine system for those that like it, and it works. It's just plain too loud for me at the range, and in the woods.

They are unlordly loud. Just ring up browning and they will send you the the unholy (ha-ha) version of the BOSS and you can enjoy it's benefits w/o the racket. You can make most bullets group better with a little adjusting. Browning recommends cleaning your barrel with the BOSS sleeve attached. GOOD LUCK.

I don't own but have fired a Browning A-Bolt in 270 Winchester and a Winchester 70 in 30-06 both with the BOSS. To me the recoil was reduced substantially. I've never fired a 243 caliber rifle so I can't say exactly what the reduced recoil felt like. Both rifles were quite easy on the shoulder nonetheless. Regarding the increased noise levels, I really did not notice this, since I always wear ear plugs and muffs at the range and electronic ear muffs while deer hunting. I hunt solely from a stand, so wearing the electronic ear muffs while hunting is no problem for me. My hunting buddy owns a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 30-06 with the BOSS. He also wears adequate hearing protection whether shooting or hunting. His rifle is a tack driver with 3-shot groups at 200 yards that could almost be covered by a quarter. Even shooting a weapon without a muzzle brake and having no hearing protection can cause damage to your ears. So, I'd have to say that I like the BOSS concept. To each his own.
