80 gr Amax

Is 80gr just too much for a 1 in 9 twist  .223?  I'm keyholing @ 25 yds...still working up a load that works  (very frustrating)  or am I just not pushing it fast enough?  I'm currently using middle of the road load.

The 80gr. A-Max is a very long bullet and it is too much for the 1 : 9" twist.  Also the 75gr. A-Max is too long to stabilize in the 1 : 9".   The Hornady 75gr Match BTHP #2279 works very well in my 1 : 9" twist .223.  This bullet length is .990".

Yup, what Eddie said. It takes a 1-8" twist to handle the 75 A Max, some times a 1 - 8" will handle the 80 grain, but some times it takes a 1 - 7" twist. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Next question then is.....what is the heaviest bullet you would use in a 1 in 9 ?

I would stop at 69 grains.Heavier is doeable.May I ask why you want to shoot such heavy bullets in a .223?Think you'll be better served with 50-60 grains even with the faster twist.If you NEED to shoot heavier bullets in a .223 for long range target work you'd be better off with something besides a handi.Just my opinion.

It really depends on the length of the bullet, more than the wieght. An 80 grain bullet would more than likly stabilize if it were a flat base design and a blunt type nose. Eddie said a bullet that is .990" in length stablized in his 1-9" 223, so I would not buy any thig over that length. It is more than likely the longest bullet you are going to stablize.

Thanks for that info.  It's too bad too....I really liked the size of the hole it blew through the double 2x6 that was holding my targets

I am in the process of building a 22BR with a 1-8" twist. I have some 75 A Max bullets along with 80 grain Noslers and Seirras to try out. I sure hope the Hornady's work out, because they are cheaper with a high BC.

Thanks for that info.  It's too bad too....I really liked the size of the hole it blew through the double 2x6 that was holding my targets 

The hole was probably due to an un-stable or marginally stable bullet tumbling through the wood

I got the sierra 69gr to shoot easy 1-1 1/2" @100 with my 1-9 when I had it. Probly could of tightened it up quite a bit but was just playing around with the heavy bullet to see was not real serious about using it for anything. thought maybe could go even heavier but am glad now after seeing what others tried that I did not waste any money on the heavier bullets. Sure do like how the 1-12" shoots the 45grainers though. Kurt
