223 SB2
« on: September 06, 2009, 10:03:53 AM »
Got a new Handi in 223.  Doesn't do very good at the 100yd dot but at least it shoots.  Haven't tried any 223 varmit loads yet.  2 or 3" spread using ball ammo.  Problem is after shooting and trying to clean I removed the forearm.  Screw was really hard to get out, and had to put some pressure on it but finally got it out and removed the forearm and barrel.  Now the problem is that when the barrel is put on and the forearm slipped on,  the forearm screw doesn't even come close to going into the barrel stud and it won't screw in with the gun assembled.  Fits fine on the barrel when not on the receiver.  Looks like the hole is not drilled in the right place.  I can bore it out to fit but don't really think I should have to do this on a new gun.  Anybody had this issue and how to remedy?

Boy, You'd think who ever put it together before you would have noticed a similar problem. I bought a new Dick's camo and had to open the hole up a bit to the rear. It just fit really tight. Sounds like yours is worse. What do you see when you look in the hole with it on barrel. I wonder if you shoot it with the forearm off, it groups better. I wouldn't send it back unless it shot sideways.
I've had to re-name these rifles.   The Handimans rifle. You got to work on em a little when you buy em.

On a wood forend it's much easier to removed the spacer and flat sand it to reduce pressure on the forend, see forend fit in the FAQs, tight forends are common, but easily fixed and almost universally require modification to eliminate vertical stringing as the barrel warms. Synthetic forends are a bit harder to work with, that's covered in the FAQs too.

Yes it seem the factory likes a tight forarm when i sent mine back it came back with the forarm stud bent back so the forarm was very tight  :-\

You'd think there would be some kind of specs. they could follow at the factory. They need to give Tim a tour of the factory and let him point out A LOT of the problem areas that we have pointed out to him and he has figured out himself. I think he would be considered an expert that has to have more experience with these Handiman specials than the people at the factory. I bet they could pay him in barrels, frames, stocks, and misc. spare parts. He could become a Handimillionare. Of course they will also need to build him a bigger gun room.

I'm happy to just be able to share suggestions with an H&R/Marlin representative, it would be nice if Remington would follow thru with more of them tho, they're a bit slow to make changes.  :-\ The new plant at Ilion has made improvements over Gardner tho, there just aren't a lot of the new Ilion produced firearms out there yet in comparison to all those produced at Gardner and they're still making tweaks to improve things so poorly fitted parts become a thing of the past, but remember, improvements may come at higher prices, for most of us we'd rather do the "tweaking" ourselves if we can get a Handi for less money.  ;D

I've figured on this for a while now. I'm sure the prices will be going up soon. That's another reason I'd like to get some barrels now but am reluctant to send a frame in for a years wait. Hoping to get one more frame so I can deal with the wait. Wasn't too long ago I think they went up.

Went to Gander Mountain today to scope out the Handi's.. and they've definately went up in price since the last time I picked one up. At least here in Va they have. At $279.. I'm sure they can be found cheaper somewhere else around town.

Just more incentive to grab one now before they go up again.. as if I needed another reason.

By the way.. I'm new here and glad to be here. There is a wealth of Handi knowledge here I've seen nowhere else.

BassPro seem to always have Handis on the rack, for the last 2 years they have cost around $275 here in Western Missouri. Dick's is still appears the best place to get a deal especially when they have their weekly or seasonal sales.
