Rimmed or rimless cartridges?
« on: September 05, 2009, 09:40:55 AM »
I did a search for 224 R-C Max, which is a 357 Max cartridge necked down to .224, essentially has the same case capacity and performance as a .222.

I can get .222 performance from a rimless .222, rimmed .222 or the 224 R-C Max.

Is there any technical reason why anyone would choose a rimmed over a rimless cartridge?

It's also known as the .224 GNR, I believe Stimpy has one. Many think rimmed chamberings are better for Handis due to brass sticking problems which is a non-issue with an extractor. Most rimmed chamberings run at lower pressures which is what really makes them better for the Handi action, but I run my 30-30AI ejector barrel near 60kpsi in 375Win brass and have never had the brass stick, OTOH, I've stuck brass in my 405 Winchester at near max loads, it got converted to an extractor.  ;)

With my 224 GNR I'm getting mid level 223 performance out the barrel , yet still in the 222 Rem powder charge range , the biggest reason I like the rimmed case is that with an extractor barrel it gives the extra rim to grab ahold of when removing the cases .

As for the sticking case issue , I don't see any real advantage to one or the other , my 223 Rem ejector works like a champ and my 22 Hornet ejector gives me fits , yet both my 224 and 22/250 extractor barrels work flawlessly .

PS -- the 224 GNR is a great p-dog / groundhog / yote round and shoots bullets from 35g to 63g with ease .
