Garden Gun Patterns
« on: August 16, 2009, 06:11:53 PM »
Mounted the little 22 cal Garden Gun barrel on an SB-1 frame and took it up to pattern it today.  Had a box of CCI shot shells with the pretty blue plastic cup and went to my favorite candy store and they had Federal and Winchester shot shells with crimped ends.  Got a box of both, only $8.95 a box! :o   OK, not really a Champagne budget, but still a bit on the high side.  Went up to our land to check out the pad for the cabin,( no wall tent this year ;D), did some shot for patterns.  At 10 feet, CCI was 2 7/8" X 2 7/8", very nice tight pattern throwing out the 2 pellets away from the group with have chopped 1/2 inch off both measurements.  Federal at 10', 4 3/8" tall,( drop 2 pellets at the bottom would have made it 3 1/4), by 4 5/8" wide.  Winchester, 4 1/2" wide by by 6" (drop the top 2 and bottom one pellets and it would be 4").  All 3 were centered right on top of the front sight.  At 15 feet things opened up as follows, Fed. 7" tallX8" wide but still a nice central pattern somewhat right to POA, Win. 8 1/2 tallX 7 1/2 wide just left of POA for main pattern and the winner CCI, 4 3/4" wide X 7 1/2" tall.  Drop 2 pellets at the top of pattern and 2 at the bottom and it's 4 1/2" tall again right on top if POA.  Oh, I did pull the paper shot wad out of the paper at the 15' target.  All groups would do a snake in with a head shot with the main pattern, and all pellets went through the backing cardboard, a double layer of a card board box holding 6 cantalopes.  Donny is gonna have a ball bustin cookies and such, Larry thank you all over again.  Next time out I'll try at 20 feet, but I think that is getting out there for number 12 shot.  It was  8) and I was  ;D.  DP

Saltine crackers make great targets and that saves the cookies for the milk! ;)

That should do a number on them thar snakes and such. Now all you need is a mini trap range.

Good one Pete, the little guy can go on Safari.
DP, need some pictures of the targets. Bet he will have some fun with his birdshotgun.
This weekend I tried some of the Speer 44 shot capsules I had loaded a few years back. Don't know what size shot were in these as I had tried 9's, 8's, 71/2's, & 6's. I know they weren't the 6's.  I used to shoot mice with my 629 Smith while mowing my field. Had pretty many targets and several hits. I shot at a target Sat. with 44 Handi and the plastic capsules went through the target and cardboard. Found more caps. to load but am thinking of trying thick paper wads instead.
Larry needs to find an old 44 barrel and open the bore a bit and chamber for Super Mag. Great project, I think! I'll volunteer to test it. Hint! Hint!

I saved the targets, not sure if they would show those little tiny holes.  I have to get one of my kids to put it on the computer for me, I still don't know much about these "newfangled" things. :P :-[  DP

dp. You may be right about the tiny #12 holes, I have a hard time seeing the #8's. Probably what I shot. The two big holes are from the shot capsule. Could just kill that bird if I aimed a little up & left. Lets see if this works.

Sometimes I get lucky, picture posted.
My grandfather won a Weaver Scoped 22 bolt Winchester 131 and gave it to me when I was about 12. I still have it. He also won 500 brick of the shot shells with the crimped end. I went to his lake cottage in Mich. and shot at least a couple of snakes in the head with it. Seemed like more than 2 but not sure after 40+ years. It did them in. I am leary of snakes so I know I wasn't too close, think about 10'. I know they loose their effectiveness at much of a distance. Great memory, Miss the old guy. He got to see my first born son before he died about 29 years ago.
I took that gun and shotshells to South Dakota about then and my cousin and I were shooting at birds under a bridge and he got one out of the air. Impressed me being scoped. (LUCKY) Also shot my first prairie dog with that gun. It was very accurate back then. Probably needs a good cleaning. Have fun with the little ones as they will remember these times long after you are gone. Mike

Glad to see it shot where you pointed it, I just did the sights by bore sighting, sounds like it will be fun.  I am in Hamilton MT now and will be home about Thursday.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.
