Hunting season starts in 37 days
« on: July 04, 2009, 08:17:51 AM »
Was talking to my hunting partner last night.  We are making plans for this years hunting trips.  Both our wives have had bouts with cancer, so we are staying close to home this year.  No two or three week trips.

But as of tomorrow we are going to put in two hours shooting every day.  No we won't be shooting our hunting rifles, most of our practice will be with 22s at 150 to 200 yards, then .223s and 30-06s on out to 500 and 700 yards.  August 3rd to the 7th we will shoot the big guns.

Caribou, Dall Sheep, and Wolf open on August 10th.  Plan to give the Handi 30-06 a real work out this year as well.

September 10 for antelope (67days). October 1 for elk (87 days). October 15 for mule deer (101 days). Dang, that sounds like a long time. Not sure which Handis will get the nod, but I'll find out soon enough. Might even have to break out a Marlin. I have one bolt rifle left. Not sure why I've kept it. Haven't shot it since 2005.

I envy every one of you.  Illinois white tail season doesn't start till November 20th and is only over 2 weekends and shotgun or muzzle loader only.  Not much other big game here either.  I'm going to go shoot some big viscous mean targets to drown my sorrows.

Went to the range this morning.  Started at 100 yards with a .22RF.  Had all shots in a 9" paper plate.  Moved to 150 yards, had 17 out of 20 shots in the plate.  Tomorrow going down to a 6" plate, at 150 yards and taking my time a bit more.  Goal is to have a 1" group at 150 yards.  Then move up to a Centerfire rifle, and progressively increase the range, out to 800 to 1000 yards.  Only got four weeks to do it in.

After all this work, watch me run into both Moose and Caribou at under 80 yards this year.  Oh well, it will be good practice for Wolves and Coyotes this coming winter.

Shooting 100- 150+ yards with a 22lr is awesome practice for long range feel with other cartridges. Not to mention a TON of fun, put out some eggs to shoot at, or some water ballons.
I like shooting paintballs at 100yards.... they are hard to hit with a 22, but a very good challenge.
