I need a gunsmith and a trigger job - where to send?
« on: July 19, 2009, 04:14:16 AM »
I don't have the facilities or tools for a trigger job and no local smith. Where can I find a smith to send my receiver to for a trigger job - what should it cost?

Have you read the FAQ's?

Its not difficult and for the cost of having someone do this you could easily purchase the minimal tools required to do it... Just a thought.

Short of this, I would speak with your local gun store counter help...

A punch, hammer, and stone is all that's needed to do a trigger job. You can do more but it's not required, As for a smith who works on handi triggers, I only know of one and you can't mention his name on GBs.

coues 2506, I understand what you mean when you say you don't have the facilities or the tools to do a trigger job.  It's not the kind of thing one should do unless you are completely comfortable with it.  Be very, very careful about taking advice from "counter help" now days.  All to often, the only thing that makes that guy an expert is they gave him a red vest when they hired him for minimum wage.

I'm sure you'll get some suggestions here, where you can get that kind of service.  GOOD LUCK !  :) Jim

In fact , I'm sure there are a few of us here who would like that information since good triggers that go back to Ilion are being "messed with".  ???

Most smiths will charge about $50 for a trigger job, but if you're gonna have to ship it to someone, you might as well just ship it to H&R for a ~3½lb trigger, Ilion has continued the tradition of free trigger jobs just like Gardner did, several members have had them done since the move. Give em a call and see what they say just in case they've changed their policy, it'll only cost you some time on the phone, toll free (866)776-9292.  ;)

Still trying to find out if you can just ship the reciver alone for a trigger job.I have done a trigger on one H&R and not happy about doing another,I can do rugers in my sleep, but fitting and trying out for pull weight with a plastic triger guard will drive you crazy.

According to what I have been able to find out , an individual may ship a firearm to a gunsmith directly, and they can ship it back to you directly.Fedex, UPS and the US postal Service all allow shipping of firearms, but advise not to mark the outside of the shipping container with anything pertaining of guns or such.If this is wrong I am sure we will hear about it ;D

Gardner accepted them, but Ilion may be a different matter, it's best to contact them and ask, toll free at (866)776-9292.  I've sent several frames only in for accessory barrels, but I alway ordered a stock set at the same time. IIRC, lonewolf5348 sent just a frame in for a trigger job, but I don't remember if it was to Ilion or Gardner, maybe he'll respond. ;)
