New Contender Stocks - Problems at 1st range trip
« on: May 29, 2009, 03:34:06 PM »
I have a G2 in 7-30 Waters. I've had it for about three years. I love it, it makes almost every range trip and I have hunted everything from hogs to deer with it. I have been wanting to get a carbine barrel and stocks for it. I've got a duaghter that is 8 and really likes to hunt with me and I think the waters would be a great cartridge for her to start with (after the 22 of course). Well my wife showed me what I am getting for  my anniversary. She has a gunsmith friend of ours doing the final work on a set of gunstocksinc thumbhole laminate stocks. She chose the tigerwood laminate. I cant wait!!! He does some great wood work as he made my wifes .243 in curly maple. It is a beautiful rifle. I cant wait to see what he does with the G2 set. I'll post pics as soon as I get some.

By the way, I'm thinking of mounting a Leupold VX I 2-7 on it. That or a Bushnell 3200 2-7. Any thoughts on the scope? My feeling is that this is a 200 yd rifle anyways, and the 3-9 just looks too big on the compact carbine.

I would put this scope on it - http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=191037 Bushnell Elite 3200 Short Action Compact - it is about the same size as a 2x7 and gives you greater magnfication. They are made for WSSM's and break open singleshots.

Well my wife picked up my finished contender today. It was agozing, but well worth the wait. I ordered bases and rings, and as soon as those come in I will be off to the range. I am VERY pleased, to say the least. WIth the long target forend and the bull barrel, it has a very unique look.

The guy that did the stocks always puts a little inlay just to make it a one-of-a-kind. He did something similar on my wifes bolt action.

Went to the range on Thursday. Got the carbine sighted in. It shoots great, very soft and the stock is very comfortable. However, I ran into a problem. Through about the first 20 rounds, almost every other shot I would get a misfire. I checked the ammo an it looked like it was a light primer strike. All but one round fired in 100 rounds, and it looked like it had a deep set primer. All 100 rounds were handloads. After the first 20, it happened sporadically, maybe every fourth or fifth round. I started cleaning the barrel every shot for the first ten, then every five after that for the whole 100 rounds. Is a possible headspace problem? I didn't ever have this issue with my 14 inch pistol barrel. Other than that, I really love the setup, I just want to get this cleared up.

Check the bolt holding the stock on. It could be too long or the stock isn't quite as thick where the bolt goes through as a factory stock and the bolt is causing problems with the hammer? I have heard of this problem with the bolt before.

What would the symptom be? Would there be some shake in the stock? I checked it out and everything is tight.

And to explain a little more about the misfires, the primer has a dent, just not enough to make it go off. I dont have a hammer extension either.

Did you happen to switch to CCI primers?
My Contender does not like them.

Nope still using Winchester primers.

One thing I am thinking is that I am using factory brass that I ran through and full length sized. Would it be better this time after I just neck size and reload?

The first thing to check is the last thing you changed.  Put a washer under the stock bolt and try it again.
