J.A. Riddle was James Andrew, and he was promoted to 1st Lt. before the war ended. He was born 1828 and died 1905. My family history tells me that his wife (mother of 5) died in 1889. And he remarried a few years later and fathered his 6th child at the age of 66, then died at the age of 77. Quite the man, I must say. He would have been first cousins with Fielden. They both had an uncle, Berry Riddle, that was killed in the "Battle of the Crater" in Petersburg 3 days into battle.
No I did not photoshop Fielden's photo, my father has the original, and I had a copy of it made. Then I put my copy on the computer with a flatbed scanner, using Microsoft Picture Perfect. Then I had to covert that into a .jpg format. I think through all those processes it darkened the background, and somewhat outlined his profile, giving the appearance that he has been cut and pasted, but that is not the case.
