« on: June 22, 2009, 09:57:31 AM »
First an intro from the new guy...

Hello,

I am new here....
I have been reading/lurking for a bit....
I am a 29 year old guy that loves shooting.  I started when I was 6 years old.  I go shooting a few times a month with my fiancé.  I have experience with/own center-fire, rim-fire, black powder, shotgun..... we have 70 acres in the boonies...

....long story short I am a member of a few boards and over at glocktalk the subject of cannons came up....and here I am...

I happened upon Doms site and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind/style/type this cannon is....
THANKS!

First things first, welcome to the board JayAK. The cannon you're asking about is a naval smoothbore shell gun designed by the US Navy officer John A. Dahlgren, and these guns in different bore sizes were among the primary Federal naval guns used during the Civil War. The two most used bore sizes were the 9-inch and 11-inch shell guns, and Dahlgren's concept was for a cannon that was designed to primarily fire shells, (exploding projectiles) but was also capable of firing solid round shot and grapeshot when needed. After the battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (Merrimack), where the 11-inch Dahlgrens of the Monitor failed to penetrate the armor of the Virginia, Dahlgren was convinced to design 13-inch, and 15-inch smoothbore guns to arm Federal ships, and finally even a few 20-inch guns that never saw service in the war.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Welcome to the fourm!

we should be able to answer your questions concerning artillery, there are some very knolegable people here!

Depending on your state regulations there should be no issues owning and firing a muzzle loading cannon, about the only

state I can think of is New Jersey, so hopfully your not there.

depending on your local there are cannon shoots/compititions that can be attended and there is a list of some of them at the top of the page.

I am not in NJ, I am in Southern IL...

I see people like "GOEX" have "cannon powder".....how does this compare to the powder used in a muzzle loading long gun??

Even full sized field guns - 12 pound Napoleons, Parrott Rifles, 3" Ordnance rifles, will fit nicely in a two car garage on their trailer.  Or in a rented storage unit.

My future wife is very understanding and supportive of my hobbies....but keeping our cars outside to keep the cannons inside is probably crossing the line.....

You will thank me for this advice later-when you get your finances started up, just make d__n sure you have your own separate checking account that you can use for hobbies, no need for missus snoopin' in on it.  Joint accounts are hobby-suicide.  I can't count how many would-be cannoneers I knew died still wanting a cannon but the ole' lady always said NO!

JayAK,  The Dahlgren you are interested is only about 19" inches long.  It is a compact piece that packs a lot of bang for its size. ;D

Would it be possible to scale the gun up to 26-30 inch range? and have a tennis ball/pop can bore?  I need to be able to still pick it up though....so weight would be an issue.... ;D

I would be fine with the golf ball bore if it couldn't go bigger, but I would like a bit larger scale of gun....

WIMP!  ;D

My wife loved being able to walk into the garage and fondle the gun.  Kind of comforting to see it there, ya know?

Problem solved!!!  Put it in the entry way and point it straight at the door.  Tell her it is for home protection!  Great for conversation at least...

Welcome to the boards Jay.  Keep asking those questions!!!  The folks here are not only VERY knowledgable but are also more than willing to help you.

Size is one of the main reasons I decided when I started to go with mortars.  I have on that shoots 6.5 oz tomato paste cans filled with cement and just got my daughter a golfball mortar.  Both are prominently displayed on end tables in the living room.  I am getting another GB mortar from Dom and already have the space on the table cleared to display that one as well.

Now if I could only get my wife to dust the things  ::)

Brokenpole, thank you for the warm welcome!

I really want to be able to display one in the home as well!

It sounds like you have a nice collection going!

sorry for your dust issues :P
