Which One Gets To Go?

OK guys, I'm stuck....and need help.  Next week I'm going to South Carolina on a pig hunt(my first experience at wild boar hunting) and can't make up my mind on which one of the kids gets to go with me.  I quickly narrowed it down to one of three...the 45-70, the .375 Win or the .357 Max.  All three are capable I know...range will be less than 100yd mostly from tree stands...head/neck shots. What do you think?

I would take the .45-70 just because its one of my favorite rounds.

If I was going to take my favorite Contender pistol hunting cartridge it would be the 375JDJ.   But since Walt didn't mention any of the JDJ's,  I think I'd pick the 375 Win.   Always liked that one too although I sold my last one somewhere around 15 years ago cause it wasn't getting used.

   My JDJ's are smaller bore...6.5 and .309... and I left them out of the equation(even though both are well within my favorites) and I wouldn't be afraid to try either on a hog...especially the .309.  The 45-70 is a sentimental long time favorite(been shootin' it a little over 20 years) and all I've ever harvested with it is a couple of smallish does although that's not the guns fault. Here lately(last two years), the .375 Win has been getting most of my attention.
   Larry, The .375 JDJ has long been the gaping hole in my arsenal.  It's the itch that I've never got around to scratching :( ???.  In fact I came upon a deal on the used .375 Win and bought it thinking I would do a rechamber.  Then I made the mistake of shooting it like it was and haven't done the rechamber.
   I may just have a little shootin' contest this weekend and the winner gets to go hunt little piggie....good excuse to burn some powder anyway ;D ;D.    Walt  :D

Yep, the 309JDJ would be more than enough for wild boar.   I've had two SSK 309 barrels, but not until after I last hunted pigs.   Heck, when I lived in The Peoples Republik my fovorite pig pistol was my Herter's 401 Power Mag and it's the one I shot the lions share of them with.   That's just a 41MAG on a small dose of steroids.  But I also shot my fair share of them with a S&W Model 19 357MAG too, a few with a S&W Model 29 and a few with a Winchester 94.  A friend used a M-1 Carbine of all things.   Left TPR in 1976 and didn't get my first 375JDJ until a few years later.   Enjoy your others while you can pard cause once you do get a 375JDJ it'll be your "go to".

I have to put a vote in for the 357max.  I have both a 14" contender barrel and a Dan Wesson in that caliber and both have harvested deer at over 100yds and pigs at up to 100yds with 200gr cast bullets and all were bang/flops.

   Well, it looks like the good news is :D...as long as the old nut behind the grip does his part, we can't go wrong with any of the three(which I really sorta suspected from the start).  I've just gotta figure out how to break the news to the other two.
   Now if these danged thunder storms would just clear out long enough for me to get in a little shootin'.......... :o :( :o

If you aren't specifically going for a trophy; I'd shoot a medium sized boar.  I shot hogs as a teen in northern Florida  and after cleaning my 1st large boar, I didn't want to try the meat; his hide was as tough as a gator's and he had a very strong gamey smell.  I never had that problem with small to med sized pigs and in Louisiana, years later, I only shot piglets as my hunting buddies called them, but they always came over to eat them when When I grilled.  They're also a breeze to clean.

    OK!!!, The .375 Win it is!  S-14 barrel with A 2X Leupy riding in three Leupold vertical split rings on a weaver base.  Shootin' Hornady 220gr over a dose of Rel 7.  I took it out again late yesterday evening and at 50yds had three out of three touching.  Bring on the Bacon!  I'm a little surprised with myself and your opinions as well...I thought the 45-70 would have won out easily.  Thanks guys, I really valued your thoughts, now like several people told me...forget the gun...take two Thermocells....huh?
BTW I'll also have on my hip my ol' 5.5" Ruger 3-screw custom Blackhawk in .45Colt with some 300gr LBT's. Can't wait...Let's Go!! ;D :D ;D   Walt

Walt, I glad you chose the 375 Win! I was going to vote for that one also. ;D The other calibers that you have are pretty well documented.    I have a 375 Win  rifle bbl that I am working up loads for with the Hrndy 220 FP and AAC 1680.....
Please post the stories and photos of your hunt with the 375Win.  I want to hear how the 375 win performs for you!
