Load Data needed for 200grn .44 mag HELP
« on: June 14, 2009, 01:04:33 PM »
I recently purchased 500 round nose lead bullets, 200 grn. to be loaded as "target" loads in .44 mag.  The problem I have is that my reloading manual does not contain any data for 200 grn LRN.  To further my problem, I only have Winchester 231 and 296 powders available, at least at this point in time.  Can anyone out there help me with some data?

Thank you all, in advance, for your help!

I would rule out the 296 powder with those bullets. I have not used 231 but I have loaded 200 grn 'plated' 44 mag/spcl with Hodgdon Universal powder. Since powder lasts a very long time I think it makes sense to get the proper power for the load.

I appreciate the input.  I will visit the Hodgon site.  I also understand getting the right powder for a load, unfortunately reloading compents, primers, powder and bullets are near impossible to find locally.  I'm using what I had managed to stockpile - hense the W231 and W296 which are the only powders I have left.

I truly appreciate the help!  Thank you.

There is plenty of data for similar bullets.  Lyman #48 lists a 200-grain pointed bullet, starting load 9.1 grains of W231 for 913 fps in the 4" .44 Mag barrel.  Max is 12.6 grains, but I'd not use that one unless you like to mine lead!  :o
