Seating past cannelure
« on: June 12, 2009, 08:59:29 AM »
Greetings all!

First off, thanks for talking/reading me into purchasing the 45-70 handi. Your writings on the rifle influenced my purchase greatly.
Sweet rifle!

Now to the meat of the matter.

Just switched to the Hornady 350 RN using 50gr IMR 3031. Shoots great, but I had to deep seat by .08 past cannelure to allow for chambering and roughly .002 jump to rifling.

One of these days I will throat the rifle, but till then.

What are your thoughts on seating past the cannelure?

Joe

Shouldn't hurt since it's not going to get pushed deeper by recoil.

Welcome georider! H&R 45-70s are notorious for short throats, as long as you work up your loads using the same COL, it's not a problem specially if you start in the trapdoor data, I wouldn't recommend doing that in ruger data tho.  ;) You can crimp if you want to using the Lee Factory crimp die which will crimp without a cannelure. You can also throat ream it by hand as shown in the FAQs and Help sticky so you can load the bigger bullets to recommended COL or even longer for 45-70 magnum loads, the FAQs is a great place to spend lots of time reading.  ;) ;) ;)

Can't help but learn something here every time I read. So much stuff in the FAQs and just poured out in regular posts. Be glad when my frame and barrels get back from illion so I can put some of it to work. Thanks Tim, you keep it interesting. eddie
