.223 accuracy problem....

Alright guys i need some help. I've got a handi rifle in .223. It's wearing a 3-9x50 prostaff. It is duracoated....I'll try to get some pics on here later. The problem is I can't get it to group well at all. We're talkin about 3" groups at 50 yards. I bought the gun used but it looked like it was in good shape and had been kept clean. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem? I read the handi basics post......never heard of it taking 80 shots to start shooting good. Can someone fill me in. I would sure appreciate any help you could offer.

Reread the basics post and then move on to the FAQ.  The answer is in there I guarantee it!  One quick suggestion:  Check for oil on the latch.   Seems to be a common problem. 

What ammo where you shooting?  Mine hates some ammo but will put others through 1 hole.

Some things to look for:
-Oil on the latch.... as stated, is a problem.
-Side to side play when the barrel is locked up.
-Large gap between the breach and barrel, hold it up the a bright light...
-Loose scope mounts and or rail. Put a very small dab of Super Glue on the screw threads of the scope rail.
-You may just have a rough bore. Flitz the hell out of it (all the while being careful of course..)
-The butstock bolt may be loose..
-Odd pressure point in the forearm.. going out on a limb there ;D

The FAQs really are awesome and have tons of hours dedicated to it all.
These are just a few things to look for. My 223 was a P.I.T.A untill I broke it in...now it's one of my very best shooting rifles, I love it.

Another thing to consider is what weight bullets are you using,and what twist is your rifeling.Basicly the 1 in 12 twist likes 40 t0 50 grn bullets and the 1 in 9 shoot 50 to 64 well.But you will find each rifel will have it's own preference.Try some different weights and see what yours likes best.

As your name implies HOGWASH read them FAQ'S it will shoot much better than that . Welcome aboard and don't believe what you've heard unless it came from the FACTS and you are in the right place to get those. Good luck let us know how she shoots after you done the right stuff. kurt

Thanks for the input. I'll spend some time reading the FAQs and keep playing with the gun. It just doesn't make sense for this little gun to not be accurate. I'll let you know if I figure out what's going on.

It was a tough row to hoe but after alot of time/patience/experimentation and luck I can get my .223 to shoot about an inch group at 100 yards. I feel the 2 most significant tweeks to get mine to shoot decent was shooting reloads with premium bullets, and getting the trigger pull reduced when I sent it in for 2 new accessory barrels. I think that when one rests  the hinge point on a sandbag vs. resting further out on the forearm like a more conventional bolt gun the effects of even a slightly heavier trigger pull tends to magnify  the effects of teter totering the barrel on the short pivot point. Also I would mention I have a 1in12 twistrate, the conventional wisdom is that it won't shoot the heavier 50 grain bullets well.  I have my best groups with 60 gr Nosler Partition, 64 gr Winchester powerpoint and 50 gr Hornady sexy red tips. I have tried the highly regarded 45 gr. Winchester whitebox... it was more like a shotgun pattern @ 50 yards... go figure. From a former skeptic, hang in there! I now have another .223 in the Ultra, a .270 in an Ultra Comp, and a accessory barrel in 45-70 Gov. and the other in 30 - 30 Win.  I don't think that I am addicted though, I can quit buying Handi's at any time... really, I can quit any time I want to...I'm not addicted!
