Author Topic: Remington Sportsman 76 Pump? (Read 2723 times)

I just traded for a Sportsman 76 pump in 30-06 in VG to EXC. cond and I was wondering what these are worth in a ballpark range. ALso, is there a way to slick up the action so that it operates faster. This one operates ok but seems to maybe be on the sluggish side when cycling rounds through the action. I thought that maybe another magazine would do the trick but I think it also may need some slicking up on the action itself. Maybe it is stiff because it almost like new. I put some teflon lubricant in the action but was thinking that there may be some tricks or things to look for to make the action slicker. It doesn't appear to be that dirty but I may hose it out with some gun scrubber and then relube to see it that helps.
ANyways, I finally got a pump Remington rifle again. I had a 760 308 carbine about 15 years ago and stupidly sold it. I bought the 760 for the princely sum of 175 out of a buddy's pawnshop and it was in exc condition. I have about $350 in the 76 with a 3x12x50 BSA scope mounted on it. I figure the scope is worth about $75, so that leaves $275 in the gun. Did I get hosed?

You got a reasonably good buy. The stiffness is just what you thought - the gun has not been broke in yet. Clean thoroughly but dont use any abrasives to loosen it up. Also, over lubing after cleaning can get you into trouble in very cold weather as well - they will get sticky. Just be patient and it will work itself in with use. Over the years I have owned 5 different Rem pumps and all worked well - a 270, 30-06 2- 35Rems and a 35whelen - all worked very well.

Funny, I did the same about a week ago! For $269, I bought a 76 in .30-06 with a POS Bushnell 4x in see-thru mounts (why are they always on pumps?) and it was so sluggish it felt as if the action were loaded with peanut butter.

I took it home, pulled the trigger group out, tossed the scope and mounts and commenced to give it a proper scrubbing. She cleaned up nice but still felt stiff even after cleaning and lubing all the usual surfaces. Two drops of ordinary oil - one on each side of the forend - transformed it into the slickest pumpgun ever! It's the sliding tubes inside the forend that were binding up matters. Two drops of oil in the right place made all the difference.

I bought it for the lovely Mrs. Redial so's she could operate it with mittens on instead of fumbling for a bolt handle. I put a Burris 4x mini in proper Weaver mounts on it and duct-taped the Bushnell to my kid's PVC spudgun. Everybody's happy!

Yea, I figured it out last night and sprayed some of the teflon oil on the pump tube and started working slicker than owl dung. Unlike yours, this one had a decent scope on it in normal mounts and is in like new cond Anyways, it may not have a walnut stock and say 7600 on it but I like it just the same and the price was a lot cheaper.

I had a beautiful 760 - used to hollar at a deer and hold it up in the air, and the deer would fall over dead looking at it - it was soooo pretty. Just kidding. I would prefer your 76 to the others. The metal is the same, only the looks are different, and contrary to what was said above - looks never killed anything. Also, I wouldn't have to worry about scratches and such.
