Questions about the .45-70
« on: May 19, 2009, 06:35:58 PM »
I have been shooting the Pardner shotguns for about 15 years and I am just getting into the Handis. I recently got a .44 mag on a SB2 reciever and now I am in the market for a .45-70 I think. i am not set up to reload right now and I am wondering what kind of accuracy you guys are getting with factory loads and how far you are shooting with them? Thank you for any help. By the way, I am addicted to these just like I have been with the shotguns.

I think you'll find any of the three 45-70 barrels will shoot excellent, the 45-70 is one of the most popular and accurate H&R chamberings.  ;) The only factory loads I've shot are the 300gr Win Silver box and the discontinued PMC 350gr +P ammo, both shot great, handloads shoot even better.

I've shot the Remington Green box, and the Hornady poly tipped.  The Hornady are a much hotter load.  Both are very accurate, but do not shoot to the same POI.  The Rems, being a heavier bullet and a slower, shoot higher at 100yds.  For close hunting, the Remington 405 grn. are hard to beat, unless I'm using my reloads.  I have shot several 1" groups at 100 with the Rems.

Tim,
The handload with the TSX-fb, was that velocity out of a BC or a shorter barrel?  Either way please PM me with the recipe, that bullet looks a bit better engineered in comaparison to other 300 grn'ers :).

24" SS Ultra Hunter, using Barnes H4198 Ruger #1 data with a COL of 2.750" which is .050" off the lands in my barrel.  ;)

Rem 405's give me 1 to 2 inch 5 shot groups at 100yds. I would shoot deer or elk out to 150yds with the 4x scope attached. Iron sights limit my view of the target to no more than 75 yds.

I shoot nothing but hand loads.  Accuracy is good.  Since it is one of the few guns I have that does not have a scope I use it when I know the shots will be up close and personal.

My hunting partner used it last year to shoot a Moose at twenty yards.  Cow Moose was above us, bullet hit shoulder then up and forward to the spine.  Moose fell like a load of bricks.

Snakeman - not a factory load by any stretch - black powder and lead bullets.  Will shoot accurately to 1000yds with a vernier and a good set of eyes.
My first outing with the BC - H777 and a 500gr bullet at 600yds ... 5 shots, 2 1/4 x 7"

I gave my 45/70 to my nefew last year, but i shot factory loads with no complaints, and tons of round ball loads. just the thing for small game, and makes almost every thing at close range a reactive target for the smile factor.

The Remington 405 grain factory load doesn't kick much and is very accurate.

Have only ever shot two boxes of factory.  One Remington 300 gr and one Hornady Leverevolution. Both shot acceptably, but nothing like my hand loads. Favorite general purpose hand load is a SAECO 21A 410 grain GC. Sub 1" a 100 yards.  Used the generic 405 grain load data from Lee as a start with H4895 (couldn't find specific load adata from SAECO anywhere).
