H4198 and Remington 405gr. in 45-70
« on: May 14, 2009, 03:39:48 AM »
Looking for some load sugestions, I have H4198 and 405gr Remington soft points. Would like a nice white tail load in the 1250 to 1650 fps range. None of my books are helping me too much - would 30 gr. do?

My std. load is 31gr. H4198 with 405gr. cast bullet.  By Hodgdon's data, it chronographs at 1459fps.  If you use a jacketed bullet or gas-checked, it'll probably run a bit slower.

LEE 2nd edition : 400 gr jacketed bullet , H4198   start/ 48.0  (fps 1934)    max/53.0 (fps  2108)

LEE 2nd edition : 405 gr bullet , H4198   start/ 38.7 (fps 1594)    max/44.0  (fps 1788)

Both those are from the modern firearms ( 3rd listing in most manuals i.e. the hot ones)   and the second load may be intended for lead 405 gr bullets , i know they are a popular wt.   ...  But i typed it just as it is printed ..

This is the link to Hodgdon's ,Winchester and IMR powders online reloading data center should be a very helpful reference for those that havent found it yet ;)
