« on: May 14, 2009, 12:32:48 PM »
Finally got it in today and took her down to the gun smith to lighten the trigger and reinstall the scope rail.Any how the barrel touches the fore end all the way from front to the screw and also all the way back.Should I have him float it from the screw forward? This is the choate synthetic stock.

Thank You

Depends...

From my experience with non-handis most guns shoot better floated.   The info on this site seems to say handis generally are the same.  My .223 ultra seems to be an exception or something.  It will shoot one hole groups at 100yds and it touches all the way just like yours.

Personally I would shoot it first and see how it shoots.  You can always float it later if it needs it.  Floating one is very easy.

I would. On all of my other guns I do it from the from the front screw, but something may be different on the handi.   I only have the one handi so I've never floated one.

I think I sorta lied in the last post.  I have had problems with other guns having wondering zeros when it touches.  They shoot great group wise but the group moves as the weather changes.  Holding zero is the most important to me. I think it's moisture warping the stock that does it.  Of course the guns I have had do this were wood stocks.  Your synthetic may react differently.

Glad you made me think of that.  I had almost forgotten.  Maybe I should float my ultra...

You may want to dig around in the FAQ.  Lot of good info in there.  Bound to be something on the topic. Maybe it'll give you a more decisive answer.  I seem to be drifting back and forth don't I :D

Probably wouldn't hurt.  I don't think I've ever had groups get worse after floating one! (Although I have heard of it a few of times - I take that back - I've heard of it ONE time)

When you call make sure that you get a price. There are a few out there that will try to take ya. My gunsmith would do it no charge and most any would do it for only a very reasonable charge.   Remember that you could do it yourself easily so you only want to pay for the convenience of being able to pick up a finished rifle.

Good luck!
