Author Topic: Sav MKII .17HM2 buildup (Read 2087 times)

I started to do a custom job on my Savage MKII FV 17HM2, also known as 17Mach2. I've had it since last fall and have over 400 rnds through it and it shoots better then I ever could so I figured it deserved a few things. So far all i've done is top it off with a Simmons ProHunter 6-18x40SF scope and Simmons 4x4 rings. I just ordered a Boyd's Evolution Stock. It was a factory overrun so It was allot less. I adjusted the trigger by cutting off 1.5 coils from the trigger spring and adjusted it till it was 100% reliable, around 1.5-2lbs now. I have more planned like a better scope mount and cut/recrown barrel to 16.25".
Here's a pic of it now and I'll post more when it changes.

If you take a coil or two off the accutrigger safety spring (silver trigger release in the middle fo the real trigger) you can gain a little on the pull wieight without affecting the reliability of the trigger. Larry

Ya, Thats the one I trimmed. Worked really well, I'd recommended it to all accu-trigger owners.

Three holes touching at 50yrds, very destructive and flat out to 150yrds. I love my custom 10/22 but this little round is just plain fast and accurate. Like a .17HMR but cheaper by allot.

this squirrel was shot at about 60 yards. it was looking right at me
and I hit it just to the left of the nose. the bullet exited between the shoulders.
Three exit holes. The 17m2 is a formidable squirrel round.
Head shots are a must. pretty much half this squirrel was ruined
even with a head shot.. double click the picture and it should open in a
larger window

Here's some new pics of the stock and where the barrel will be cut with a 11degree crown placed on it. I have a gunsmith friend that is going to do the barrel work for $20 and is also going to help with the pillar/glass bedding. the pillars will be tricky but worth it in the end. Not alot of space for them, especially in the front. We're hoping to glass in some SS tubing for the action posted to slide into.

You can see the LOP is a little longer on the Evo stock.

Here is the action slipped in to show how it fits and where the barrel will be shortened to, on the shorter side of the white marker.

Hey I bedded my Savage rimfires, it's kind of a pain to get it right on that cylindrical recoil lug. Either way I bedded both of mine, and I can say that it helped my MkII a bit, I didn't really notice any improvement on my 93 though. You are lucky in that you found someone else to do it for you.

I am pleased to hear of another shooter happy with the 17 HM2! I got a 23" bull barrel for my Contender rifle last year. I did not get to take it out squirrel hunting last season, but it is indeed murder on golf balls 50 yds and beyond !

I just got the barrel back and it looks great. I'll mount it up to get beter pics tonite. He ended up doing it for no charge because I helped him with getting free ringtones that worked on Verizon phones. I also have a pic of his 243 next week. It has a 4" diameter and weighs 68lbs total. shoots 3" at 1000yrds(claimed). So far olny one man has been able to shoulder it and shoot. it's on a Savage action.

Here it is sitting in the stock. I'll stipple the stock this weekend and start the Truoil to it also. Next to it is my 10/22 for comparison, it has a Boyds Blaster stock w/ a GreenMountain 20 SS Fluted barrel and VQ stabilizer.

Sorry that all is going so slow but I just got my bedding kit, knarled 1" bolt handle, Tru-oil and Sims Sharpshooter X-Ring (Barrel De-Resonater). I'll get the pillars from hardware store tomorrow and hopefully get it bedded and add new handle this weekend. Then I can finish the stock and I'm in business. That does pose one question I forgot to check on. Should I Tru-Oil it or bed it 1st?

My Savage Mark II 17 mach2 also shoots beyond my expectations - 5 into area smaller than a quarter at 50. It is at least if not more accurate than my hb Marlin 17 HMR. Remington ammo works excellent in it. I really like the stock modification as the change is cosmetic but would not bed it. Trigger adjustment beyond the stock accutrigger settings ? I use my rifle for shooting in the field not as a bench shooter and 1 1/2 lbs trigger pull is into the unsafe zone for a walk around rifle IMO.
